.‫ﺎب‬ THIS IS A BOOK. HIKI NI KITABU.

ْ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َﻣ‬


.ٌ‫ﺴ ِﺠﺪ‬ THIS IS A MOSQUE. HUU NI MSIKITI.

ٌ َ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺑ‬
.‫ﺎب‬ THIS IS A DOOR. HUU NI MLANGO.

. ٌ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺑَ ْﯿﺖ‬ THIS IS A HOUSE. HII NI NYUMBA.

.‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻗَﻠَ ٌﻢ‬ THIS IS A PEN. HII NI KALAMU.

ِ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻛ ُْﺮ‬


.‫ﺳ ﱞﻰ‬ THIS IS A CHAIR. HIKI NI KITI.

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ِﻣ ْﻔﺘَﺎ‬


.‫ح‬ THIS IS A KEY. HUU NI UFUNGUO.

.‫ﯾﺮ‬ َ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا‬


ٌ ‫ﺳ ِﺮ‬ THIS IS A BED. HIKI NI KITANDA.

ٌ َ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َﻣ ْﻜﺘ‬


.‫ﺐ‬ THIS IS A DESK. HII NI MEZA.

‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬ WHAT’S THIS? HIKI NI NINI?

‫؟‬.....‫أَ َھ ٰـﺬَا‬ IS THIS…? HIKI NI…?


‫أَ َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺑَ ْﯿﺖٌ ؟‬ IS THIS A HOUSE? HII NI NYUMBA?

‫ﻧَﻌَ ْﻢ‬ YES NDIO

Hili ni Shati. Hili ni nini?

.‫ َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻗَﻠَ ٌﻢ‬،‫ﻻ‬ ٌ ‫أَ َھ ٰـﺬَا ِﻣﻒﺗَﺎ‬


‫ح؟‬
No, this is a pen. Is this a key?

Hapana, hii ni kalamu. Huu ni Ufunguo?


. ٌ‫ َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺑَ ْﯿﺖ‬،‫ﻧَﻌَ ْﻢ‬ ‫أ َ َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺑَ ْﯿﺖٌ ؟‬

Yes, this is a house. Is this a house?

Ndio, hii ni nyumba. Hii ni nyumba?

ِ ‫ َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻛ ُْﺮ‬،‫ﻻ‬
.‫ﺳ ﱞﻲ‬ ‫ﯾﺮ؟‬ َ ‫أ َ َھ ٰـﺬَا‬
ٌ ‫ﺳ ِﺮ‬
No, this is a chair. Is this a bed?

Hapana, hiki ni kiti. Hiki ni kitanda?

.‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻧَ ْﺠ ٌﻢ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬

This is a star. What is this?

Hii ni nyota. Hii ni nini?

‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
Who is this?, Huyu ni nani? / ,

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َط ِﺒ‬


.‫ﯿﺐ‬ ‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬ َ◌ا؟‬
This is a doctor. Who is this?

Huyu ni Daktari. Huyu ni nani?

.ٌ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َوﻟَﺪ‬ ‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬


This is a boy. Who is this?

Huyu ni mtoto wa kiume Huyu ni nani?

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َطﺎ ِﻟ‬


.‫ﺐ‬ ‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a student. Who is this?
Huyu ni mwanafunzi Huyu ni nani?

.‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َر ُﺟ ٌﻞ‬ ‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬


This is a man. Who is this?

Huyu ni mwanaume Huyu ni nani?

ِ َ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﺗ‬
.‫ﺎﺟ ٌﺮ‬ ‫َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a merchant. Who is this?

Huyu ni mfanyabiashara Huyu ni nani?

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َﻛ ْﻠ‬


.‫ﺐ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـذَا؟‬
This is a dog. What is this?

Huyu ni Mbwa? Hiki ni nini?

‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ﻗِ ﱞ‬
.‫ﻂ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a cat. What is this?

Huyu ni paka. Hiki ni nini?

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ِﺣ َﻤ‬


.‫ﺎر‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a donkey. What is this?

Huyu ni punda. Hiki ni nini?


ٌ ‫ﺼ‬
.‫ﺎن‬ َ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ِﺣ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a horse. What is this?

Huyu ni farasi. Hiki ni nini?

ٌ ‫َھ ٰـﺬَا ِد‬


.‫ﯾﻚ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬
This is a rooster. What is this?

Huyu ni jogoo. Hiki ni nini?

.‫َھ ٰـﺬَا َﺟ َﻤ ٌﻞ‬ ‫َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬


This is a camel. What is this?

Huyu ni ngamia. Hiki ni nini?

‫ﯿﺺ؟‬

Hapana, hii ni karatasi ya

o The Demonstrative Pronoun - ‫' َھ ٰـﺬَا‬This is…'


o The particle َ ‫ أ‬as in ‫؟‬...‫ھ ٰـﺬَا‬
َ َ ‫ أ‬i.e. 'Is This a...?'
o The word ‫ﻣﺎ‬ َ which means 'what' as in ‫ َﻣﺎ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬- 'What is this?'
o The words for Yes and No - ‫ﻢ‬ ْ َ‫ ﻧَﻌ‬and ‫ ﻻ‬respectively.
o The word ‫ﻦ‬ ْ ‫ َﻣ‬which means 'who' as in ‫ َﻣ ْﻦ َھ ٰـﺬَا؟‬- 'Who is this?'
o Several new words - these have to be memorised as vocabulary is very
