MIS Assignment 1

1. Types of Software

 System Software: System software is a type of computer program that is designed

to run a computer's hardware and application programs. If we think of the
computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between
the hardware and user applications.
 Application software: An application is any program, or group of programs, that
is designed for the end user. Applications software include such things as
database programs, word processors, Web browsers and spreadsheets.
 Operating software: OS is a part of System Software that provides a software
platform on top of which other programs, called application programs, can run.
Eg: Windows

2. General Structure

 Input: An input device is a piece of computer hardware equipment used to

provide data and control signals to an information processing system such as a
computer or information appliance. Examples of input devices include
keyboards, mouse, scanners, digital cameras and joysticks.
 Output: Any information that has been processed by and sent out from a
computer or similar device is considered output. A simple example of output is
anything you view on your computer monitor.
 Storage devices: A storage device is any hardware capable of holding
information either temporarily or permanently. There are two types of storage
devices used with computers: a primary storage device, such as RAM, and a
secondary storage device, like a hard drive. Secondary storage can be
removable, internal, or external storage.
