● Understanding that all people deserve respect and a safe
environment, no matter their gender, identity or
expression.
What is ‘gender binarism’?
Some people think about gender as “male”
and “female” gender roles.

Some people think of gender as being a

spectrum and may identify as one, both, or
a combination of genders.

Factors such as: Sex is determined by:

with the world around them
Are there only two genders?

In the past three decades, more than 25 genes have been identified
that were once believed to be associated solely with male or female
biology, but in fact exhibit more complex, nonbinary variations.

With the advent of new scientific knowledge, it is increasingly evident

that biological sex does not fit a binary model. Intersex conditions are
increasingly being recognized as naturally occurring variations of
human physiology.

What does transgender mean?

According to the APA (American Psychological

Association), transgender refers to people “whose
gender identity, gender expression or behavior
does not conform to that of the sex they were
assigned at birth.”
What does cisgender mean?

A cisgender person is someone who does identify

with the gender they were assigned with at birth.
What does non-binary mean?

Non-binarism refers to people who do not identify strictly as male

or female. “Non-binary” is essentially an umbrella term for
identities such as:
- androgynous (exhibiting both male and female qualities),
- genderqueer (gender nonconforming)
- agender (lacking any identity towards gender roles in general).
