Aisc Design Examples v15.0

The document discusses controlling deflections in reinforced concrete by specifying minimum member depths or thicknesses, and by specifying maximum permissible calculated deflections. It provides a table that lists deflection limitations for different structural members depending on their condition and likelihood of being damaged by large deflections. It also notes that immediate deflections should be calculated using usual methods for elastic deflections, taking into account the effects of cracking and reinforcement on member stiffness.

CONTROL OF DEFLECTIONS

Reinforced concrete specifications usually limit deflections by

1- Specifying certain minimum depths or thicknesses ACI Table 9.5(a)

2- Specifying maximum permissible computed deflections, ACI Table 9.5(b)Table 24.2.2—Maximum

permissible calculated deflections

Deflection

Flat roofs elements likely to be damaged by large S, and R

Floors deflections Immediate deflection due to L l/360

Likely to be That part of the total deflection occurring

by large deflections
CALCULATION OF DEFLECTIONS

Deflections that occur immediately on application of load shall be computed by usual methods or
formulas for elastic deflections, considering effects of cracking and reinforcement on member
stiffness. Actual beam deflection is a function of: 1) Load 2) Span 3) Stiffness
