Chart: Clay End Points

This document provides information about a chart for identifying clay minerals using neutron-density logs. It includes the purpose of the chart, which is to display matrix endpoints for clay minerals to aid in their identification on neutron-density crossplots. It also lists the matrix endpoints for various clay types, reservoir rocks, and other materials like anhydrite and salt. Finally, it describes three charts for reservoir matrix endpoints and provides an example of one chart overlaid on a neutron-density crossplot.

Chart: clay end points

To be used with the Compensated Neutron Log and

Litho-Density Tool crossplot (Por-11, Por-12) and to
aid in the identification of clay minerals.
Outline

 Purpose
 Geoframe overlay
 TNPH, RHOB end points
 Charts
 Example
Purpose

 To provide a chart which displays the matrix end points for

clay minerals when used in conjunction with the
neutron/density crossplot, specifically, Chart Por-11 & Por-
12.
 Chart will aid in the identification of minerals on the
neutron/density crossplot.
Geoframe overlay to aid in the identification of clays.
Techlog Chart for TNPH & RHOB matrix end points:
(based on Chartbook - Appendix B)
 Reservoir matrix end points
– Sandstone (-0.02 v/v, 2.64 g/cc)
– Limestone (0.0 v/v, 2.71 g/cc)
– Dolomite (0.01v/v, 2.85 g/cc)
 Clay matrix end points (Wet)
– Chlorite (0.52 v/v, 2.76 g/cc)
– Illite (0.30 v/v, 2.52 g/cc)
– Kaolinite (0.37 v/v, 2.41 g/cc)
– Montmorillonite (0.60 v/v, 2.12 g/cc)
 Miscellaneous end points
– Anhydrite (-0.02 v/v, 2.98 g/cc)
– Salt (-0.03 v/v, 2.04 g/cc)
