Work Standards

 A company that processes fruits and vegetables is able

to produce 400 cases of canned peaches in one half
hour with 4 workers. What is the labor productivity?

 Ans. 200 cs/ labor hrs

 A direct time study was taken on a manual work
element using the snapback method. The regular cycle
consisted of 3 elements A, B and C. Element D is an
irregular element performed every 5 cycles
Work Element A B C D
Observed time (min) 0.56 0.25 0.50 1.10
Performance Rating 100% 80% 110% 100%
What is the Normal Time?
Ans. 1.53 minutes
 What is the contrast created by black text (reflectance
= 10%) on white paper (reflectance = 90%)

 Ans. 0.89
 A time study analyst has collected 10 readings on a
particular work element of interest and would like to
consider how many more cycles to time. Based on the
sample, the mean time for the elements is 0.40
minutes and the sample standard deviation is 0.07
minutes. At a 95% confidence level, how many cycles
should be timed to ensure the actual time is within +/-
10% of the mean

 Ans. 11.76 or 12 cycles

 Carla takes an average of 10 minutes to complete a
particular questionnaire. Carla’s performance rating is
110% and there is an allowance of 15%. What is the
standard time of completing the job?

 Ans. 12.9 minutes

 What is the luminance of a surface having a 50%
reflectance and 4 foot candle illumination?

 Ans. 2 fL
 How big should a time study sample be if we desire a
95% level of confidence, an accuracy of 5% when the
standard deviation of the initial sample is 0.50 and the
mean of the initial sample is 4.50 minutes.

 Ans. 18.97 or 19 samples

 If a job takes 2 minutes and the worker is working 20%
faster than normal and the allowance factor is 0.15,
then the standard time is ?

 Ans. 2.76 minutes

 The production or 240 units during a 480 minute work
shift results in a takt time of:

 Ans: 120 seconds

 A takt time of 90 seconds generates a process output
of:

 Ans: 40 units
 Using the assembly line balancing procedure what is
the theoretical minimum number of workstations if
the task times for the 8 tasks that make-up the job are
7,4,7,8,9,4,3 and 6 minutes, and the cycle time is 8
minutes?

 Ans: 6 workstations
 One Time Measurement Unit (TMU) in Methods Time
Measurement (MTM) equals how many minutes?

 Ans: 0.0006 minutes

 A manufacturing company has conducted a time study for ten (10)
cycles of a job. The job has five (5) elements and the total elemental
times (minutes for each element and performance rating factors ) are
as follows:
 Elements Sum t (mins) RF
1 3.61 1.05
2 4.84 0.90
3 2.93 1.00
4 4.91 1.10
5 1.78 0.95
Compute the Standard Time using Allowance factor of 18% that is added
to its Normal Time?

Ans: 2.124
 Assume a total cycle time of 4 minutes to produce a
product as measured from the start of the unloading of
the previously completed product to the end of the
machine cycle time. Operator servicing which includes
both loading and unloading time of raw material and
product is one (1) minute while the cycle time of the
machine is three (3) minutes. How many machines
would be the assignment of the operator?

 Ans: 4
 The Normal Time for a task has been set as 33.9
minutes. Total allowances have been set as 72 minutes
in a 450 minutes shift. Determine the Allowance
fraction.

 Ans: 0.16
