News from the Office
Lincoln Elementary invited our retired staff to our Thanksgiving lunch. It was wonderful to
see all our retirees! Dr. Dalton even stopped by to visit. We had a great time visiting with
everyone. Once a Patriot, always a Patriot!

Please remember that we do have a Lost & Found. It is usually always full with coats,
jackets, gloves, etc., so if your child has a "missing" item, please feel free to come to school
and ask to look in our Lost & Found. Thank you!
Please make sure that your child’s name is written inside their jackets, book
sacks, lunchboxes, or any other personal item.
The Classroom Corner
Pre-Kindergarten
PreK is busy learning about Animals. We are learning about animal habitats, foods that each
animal eats, and the care that is needed for our pets. On December 5, we are excited that
Dr. Perry will be visiting and reading to our class. December 7th, we have a field trip to The
Fossil and Hands On Museum in Gray TN. We are very excited about all of the fun
experiences we are having in PreK!

Kindergarten
Our Kindergarten students are making great progress in their learning! Thank you so much
for reinforcing our daily learning at home and reading with your child! Please continue to
work on sight words and teen numbers. If your child brings home a reader, please read it
with them and then have them bring it back to exchange for a different book. Don’t forget to
send in your child’s money and permission form for the Doak House Field Trip. We are
excited to have Rudolph Day on December 19th and Winter Parties on December 20th. A
note will be sent home soon with information about Winter Parties.

First Grade
First grade is getting excited for the FUN themes we will be learning during the month of
December! We just finished learning about how important Veterans are to us! We also
focused on our state of Tennessee and everything that makes it so wonderful! We are
proud to live in such a beautiful state! During December, in ELA, we will be learning about
different parts of a plant, it’s functions, and it’s life cycle. In math, we will are continuing to
learn and practice our subtracting skills. We love learning new ways to solve different math
problems! Please continue reading at home and practicing our sight words! This will help
your child continue to be successful learners! We are so proud of their hard work!!

Second Grade
Our Second Grade students are in for an EXCITING December! We are starting two digit
addition and subtraction with regrouping. Please make sure you are reviewing and helping
your child with their math sheet every night. In Reading, please continue to read and answer
the fluency passages and questions. In addition to math and reading, please work on tying
shoes with your child. To get into the Holiday Spirit, we are celebrating the season of giving.
We will be collecting items to share with our friends in each homeroom. Please be thinking
about anything you would like to contribute. More information to follow.

Third Grade
Our Third Grade students are continuing to strive for academic success in their learning!
Look for multiplication fluency practice each week. Students will move at their own pace
based on a weekly test. All students that master each fact will earn an invitation to a
Multiplication Celebration!!! It is also important that students read daily, study their spelling
pattern words and review other weekly skills found on their Monday Reading Study Guide.
Fourth Grade
Our Fourth Grade students are working incredibly hard on such exciting skills! In English
Language Arts, students are working on Characterization, Theme, Point of View,
Setting/Character/Plot, using dialogue, and vocabulary. In Science, we are learning about how
sound and light travel in waves and the devices that exhibit them. In Social Studies, we are
learning about the American Revolution through a novel study of Johnny Tremain. In Math, we
are learning fractions and how to simplify them. Therefore, it is necessary for your student to
know their multiplication facts. Thanks for all you do!

Fifth Grade
We had a great time traveling to Greeneville to listen to the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.
Many of the students were able to listen to the instruments they are playing in band. Winter
break will be here before we know it, so please make sure your student is reading their take-
home passage every night. Ask them questions and ask them to use text to support their
answer. Also, practice long division and multi-digit multiplication. If you need help with
assignments, please contact your child's teacher. We hope you and your family have a very
restful and healthy winter break.
EL Update
Our International Night was a huge success and we want to say thank you to all who helped!
We hosted over 200 people and a great time was had by all. An event this size could not be
accomplished without the support of our staff and families. Again, many thanks for your help!

Miss Troutman & Ms. Potter’s Classes

Ms. Potter and Miss Troutman's classes will be learning about Holidays around the world
throughout the month on December. Countries that we will learn about include the United
States, Mexico, Canada, Germany, and Australia. We will be making ornaments to represent
what we have learned about each country.

LHES Art Days

Art Infused Education is a cross-curricular way of teaching about and with the arts, to build
knowledge and competency in various subjects including art, reading, math, science and social
studies. At Lincoln Heights Elementary we have dedicated 4 days for art infused education.
Students are able to express their creativity through different projects such as tye dye,
illustrations from our favorite books, and culture diversity. We have another art day scheduled
for January 4th. Student's art will be displayed at the Morristown Mall and Hospital. We hope
that our displayed art will bring as much joy to the community as it has brought our students,
staff, and school.

News from Douglas Cherokee

Dear All, I hope you had a great Thanksgiving. I want to thank each of you for the support
that you provide to our programs. On December 4th we will have our first Coffee and
Conversation event with parents. The workshop will cover suicide prevention. We have two
mental health professionals who will be speaking at the event. The workshop will
be from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at Lincoln Heights Elementary School and is being presented in
collaboration with HOLA Lakeway. Afterschool staff will be sending the invitation to the
parents this week. Best regards, Betsy Jimenez Hurst (Director of Afterschool Programs)
Special Areas
School Counseling/Guidance
During the month of December in Guidance, we will be covering topics such as internet safety
and personal body safety. This are state mandated topics that have to be covered. I am
sending home a letter with more details about the topics so please be on the look out for the
information. If you have any questions about the topics, please call the school and ask to
speak with me directly. Also Fifth grade will be working on soft skills (interview skills) and will
be participating in the Great Handshake Challenge on December 7th. Parents if your child is in
5th grade please be watching for a note to come home explaining the challenge as well. As
always I am here to help your child in anyway. If you need anything or would like for me to
speak with your child, please let me know by phone or email.

Music
4th and 5th Recorder Karate is in full swing. Please allow and encourage students to practice
at home in order to be successful and able to progress through the program. Students are
asked to bring their recorder to music every day. Keeping it in their backpack is a good idea
so they are less likely to forget to bring it. 2nd and 3rd are starting a unit on music history.
We will learn about the Baroque period and particularly highlight the life and compositions of
Johann Sebastian Bach. Kindergarten and 1st will spend the month learning about holidays and
cultural celebrations of the season from around the world.

PE
During the month of December in PE we have many EXCITING skills to learn about. Students
will be engaged in learning about Floor Hockey, Holiday Fitness Fun, Floor Skating and the 5
Components of Overall Fitness- Strength, Endurance, Flexibility, Speed and Agility. Please
make sure that your child/children are wearing proper footwear on their PE day.

Library
We are excited to announce that we received an $18,000 grant for a Library Makeover! Be
on the lookout out for EXCITNG changes happening in the library during the Spring of 2019!

Patriot PRIDE
This year at Lincoln we have implemented a new Behavior system called Patriot Pride. We are
excited about the results we are seeing throughout our school. Our students are starting to
understand the expectations for them are the same in every area of the building and it is
helping to keep them consistent. We are also seeing more students moving less magnets
throughout the day and earning the positive rewards we have for them. This month we have
two celebrations that our students have worked hard to earn. One of those being lunch with
the principals where 178 students will get the opportunity to enjoy their lunch with our
principals Mrs. Green and Mrs. Christian. This number has drastically increased from the first
lunch in August. Another reward this month is our Glow Stick Dance Party on December 14th.
Students have worked all nine weeks to achieve this opportunity. We are excited to celebrate
all of their hard work this month.
