Quiz 2: Name TWO (2) Software Utilities Provided by Windows Operating System That You Can Use To Maintain Your Computer?

The document provides information about software utilities provided by Windows and their functions. It discusses two utilities: (1) the GUI (Graphical User Interface), which allows users to interact with icons and graphics instead of text; and (2) multitasking, which allows multiple processes to run simultaneously. The document also covers benefits of communication networks like facilitating communication, sharing files and resources, and types of communication media like wired and wireless technologies.

QUIZ

1)Name TWO (2) software utilities provided by

Windows operating system that you can use to
maintain your computer?
GUI
Short for Graphical User Interface, a GUI Operating System contains
graphics and icons and is commonly navigated by using a computer mouse

Multitasking
An operating system that is capable of allowing multiple software processes
to run at the same time
2)Describe the function and purpose of the above
TWO (2) software utilities.
*In computing, a graphical user interface or GUI, sometimes pronounced /
ˈɡuːi/ ("gooey")[1] is a type of interface that allowsusers to interact with electronic
devices through graphical icons and visual indicators such as secondary notation, as
opposed to text-based interfaces, typed command labels or text navigation. GUIs were
introduced in reaction to the perceived steep learning curve of command-line
interfaces (CLIs),[2][3][4] which require commands to be typed on thekeyboard.
The actions in a GUI are usually performed through direct manipulation of the graphical
elements.[5] In addition to computers, GUIs can be found in hand-held devices such
as MP3 players, portable media players, gaming devices and smaller household, office
and industry equipment. The term "GUI" tends not to be applied to other low-
resolution types of interfaces with display resolutions, such as video
games (where HUD[6] is preferred), or not restricted to flat screens, likevolumetric
displays[7] because the term is restricted to the scope of two-dimensional display screens
able to describe generic information, in the tradition of the computer science research at
the PARC (Palo Alto Research Center).

*In computing, multitasking is a concept of performing multiple tasks (also known

as processes) over a certain period of time by executing them concurrently. New tasks
start and interrupt already started ones before they have reached completion, instead of
executing the tasks sequentially so each started task needs to reach its end before a new
one is started. As a result, a computer executes segments of multiple tasks in an
interleaved manner, while the tasks share common processing resources such ascentral
processing units (CPUs) and main memory.

3)What are the benefits of having a communication

network?
Facilitate communications
Using a network, people can communicate efficiently and easily via email, instant
messaging, chat rooms, telephone, video telephone calls, and video conferencing.

Permit sharing of files, data, and other types of information

In a network environment, authorized users may access data and information stored on
other computers on the network. The capability of providing access to data and
information on shared storage devices is an important feature of many networks.

Share network and computing resources

In a networked environment, each computer on a network may access and use resources
provided by devices on the network, such as printing a document on a shared network
printer. Distributed computing uses computing resources across a network to accomplish
tasks.

4)Name the TWO (2) groups of communication media

and list the types of technologies used?
*Wired technologies
-Twisted pair wire
-Coaxial cable
-Optical fiber

*Wireless technologies
-Terrestrial microwave
-Communications satellites
-WiFi
-Bluetooth

5)Explain the differences between LAN versus CAN.

*Local area network
A local area network (LAN) is a network that connects computers and devices
in a limited geographical area such as home, school, computer laboratory,
office building, or closely positioned group of buildings.
*Campus area network
A campus area network (CAN) is a computer network made up of an
interconnection of LANs within a limited geographical area. The networking
equipment (switches, routers) and transmission media (optical fiber, copper
plant, Cat5 cabling etc.) are almost entirely owned (by the campus tenant /
owner: an enterprise, university, government etc.).

6)Explain the differences between Full-Mesh and

Partially-Mesh networks.
*Partial-Mesh Topology is much like the full-mesh, only we don’t
connect each device to every other device on the network.
*Instead we only implement a few alternate routes.
*You’ll see the Partial-Mesh topology in backbone environments, since these
are often vital networks that depend on redundancy to keep services running
(such as an Internet Service Provider).
*Full-Mesh topology is commonly seen in WANs between routers, yet also
on smaller networks that depend on a redundant connection

7)Describe the following communication software

- email, Instant Messaging and VOIP,
*Emails
Electronic mail, commonly known as email or e-mail, is a method of
exchanging digital messages from an author to one or more recipients.

*Instant Messaging
Instant messaging (IM) is a form of communication over the Internet, that
offers an instantaneous transmission of text-based messages from sender to
receiver.

*VOIP (Voice over IP)

Voice over IP (VoIP) commonly refers to the communication protocols,
technologies, methodologies, and transmission techniques involved in the
delivery of voice communications and multimedia sessions over Internet
Protocol (IP) networks, such as the Internet.
