Possessive determiners
Os determinantes possessivos usam-se com substantivos, para dizer a quem pertence alguma coisa e
colocam-se sempre antes de um substantivo (aquilo que é possuído).

My – meu(s), minha(s) Your – teu(s), tua(s) His – seu(s), sua(s) (dele)

Woofy is my dog. This is your present. His kite is big.

Her - seu(s), sua(s) (dela) Its - seu(s), sua(s) (dele, dela) – é um determinante pouco
usado, pois os animais e os objectos não possuem coisas.

Its tail is very long.


Her bike is pink.

Our – nosso(s), nossa(s) m Your – vosso(s), vossa(s) Their – seu(s), sua(s) (deles, delas)

Our kite is cool. That is your turtle. This is their dog.


Nota: O determinante possessivo its não leva apóstrofo e não deve ser confundido com as formas abreviadas do verbo
to be: (it’s= it is)e do verbo have got: (it’s got = it has got).

A - Look at the words in brackets and complete the sentences using my, His, her, its, our and their:
1. ____________________ name is Hannah. (me)
2. ____________________ names are Philip and Helen. (my parents)
3. ____________________ favourite sport is football. (my brother)
4. ____________________ hobby is playing the piano. (my sister)
5. ____________________ bedroom is very big. (my sister and me)

B - Replace the underlined nouns with the correct possessive adjective.

2. The girls’ toys are on the floor.  …………… toys are on the floor.
3. Lara’s hair is blond and curly.  …………… hair is blond and curly.
4. The elephant’s ears are big.  …………… ears are big.
