CRE Assignment Problems 1 4

1. To reach 75% conversion of reactant A in a first-order reaction would take 10 minutes, as 50% conversion took 5 minutes. 2. For a 1/2-order reaction where 75% conversion took 10 minutes, the fraction converted in a 30 minute run would be the same 75%. 3. The rate equation that best represents the given conversion data for a batch reaction, with 80% conversion at 8 minutes and 90% conversion at 18 minutes, is second order.

1. Liquid A decomposes by first-order kinetics, and in a batch reactor 50% of A is
converted in a 5-minute run. How much longer would it take to reach 75% conversion?
Given:
t1 = 5 min XA1 = 50%
t2 = (required) XA2 = 75%
Solution:
-ln(1 – XA) = kt
-ln(1 – 0.5) = k*(5 min)
k = 0.1386294361 min-1
-ln(1 – 0.75) = (0.1386294361 min-1)*t
t = 10 min

2. A 10-minute experimental run shows that 75% of liquid reactant is converted to product
by a ½ -order rate. What would be the fraction converted in a half -hour run?
Given:
t1 = 10 min XA1 = 75% n=½
t2 = 30 min XA2 = (required)
Solution:
dC
-rA = − dt = -kC0.5
𝐶𝐴 ⅆ𝐶
∫𝐶 = 𝑘 ∫ 𝑑𝑡
𝐴0 𝐶 0.5

2(𝐶𝐴.5 - 𝐶𝐴0
.5
) = kt
2[(1)0.5 – (0.25)0.5] = k*(10 min)
k = 0.03333… min-1
2[(1)0.5 – (1-XA2)0.5] = (0.03333… min-1)*(30 min)
XA2 = 0.75
3. After 8 minutes in a batch reactor, reactant (CA0 = 1 mol/liter) is 80% converted; after 18
minutes, conversion is 90%. Find a rate equation to represent this reaction.
Given:
t1 = 8 min XA = 80%
t2 = 18 min XA = 90%
Required:
n (order)
Solution:
*Try first order
-ln(1 – XA) = kt -ln(1 – XA) = kt
-ln(1 – 0.8) = k*(8 min) -ln(1 – 0.9) = k*(18 min)
k = 0.2012 min-1 k = 0.1279 min-1
*The constants do not match, try second order
1 0.8 1 0.9
k*(8 min) = 1 mol/L (1−0.8) k*(18 min) = 1 mol/L (1−0.9)

k = 0.5 k = 0.5
*k is constant in both situations
dC
∴ - dt = 0.5𝐶𝐴2
4. Find the overall order of the irreversible reaction 2𝐻+2𝑁𝑂→𝑁+2𝐻𝑂 from the following

2.017033−2.060698
Slope= 2.50515−2.447158
=-0.75294

Slope=1-n

∴ n=1.75294, the order of the equation is 1.75294
