CITES is an international agreement between governments to protect endangered plants and animals. Certain Greenlandic handicrafts containing whale, narwhal, walrus or polar bear require a CITES permit for export. The permit proves the product's legal origin and allows the holder to import it into their home country. Greenland's sealing and hunting traditions are closely tied to Inuit culture and regulated according to international standards, making handicrafts an art form that combines nature and function more than mere souvenirs.
