The family

family is a primary unit in all societies defined as:


persons who are related by blood, marriage, or a strong emotional
commitment to each other's Physical, emotional and spiritual ,wellbeing.
(it is a group of biologically related individuals living together and eating
from a common kitchen "park")As a biological unit, the family members
share a pool of genes, as a social unit, they share a common physical and
social environment, as a cultural unit, the family reflects the culture of the
wider society of which it form a part and determines the behavior and
attitudes of its members. the family is also an epidemiological unit, and a unit
for providing social services as well as comprehensive medical care.
Family life cycle:
Families are not constant they having six phases.
I. formation (beginning by marriage ending by birth of IST child).
II. Extension (birth of IST child -----birth of last child).
III. Complete extension (birth of last child----IST child leaves home).
IV. Contraction (IST child leaves home---last child leaves home).
V. completed contraction (last child leaves home----1st spouse dies).
VI. Dissolution (1st spouse dies--- death of survivor).
TYPES OF FAMILY:
1. Nuclear family. Is universal in all human societies.
It consists of the married couple and their children while they are still
regarded as dependents.
2. Joint. Or extended family is a kind of family grouping.
3. Three generation family.
4. Polygamous family: A family of more than one wife (i.e., two or more
wives) living together.
5.communal family
FUNCTIONS OF THE FAMILY:
. Residence.
. Division of labor.
. Reproduction and rearing of children.
. Socialization.
. Economic functions.
. Social care.
. Personality formation.
. Care of dependent adults.
. Stabilization of adult personality
.Familial susceptibility to disease.
. Broken family &Problem families
Family circle:
It is one of the methods for discussing emotional & relationship problems
without focusing on individual pathology.The family circle provides a
picture of family relationships as viewed by the person making the
drawing arrow).The size of the circle indicates the importance; the
distance from others reflects the degree of emotional attachment or
closeness. Significant others, including friends & pets may also be
included if the person feels they are part of the family. The date is very
important because these relationships almost always change over time.
The differences in family circles drawn by each member can serve as a
focus for discussion.

My husband and my son are the most important to me .My mom is also very important but I do
not feel as close as to me as fiends and I feel very distant from my dad
The family genogram:
Is a tool used by the physicians to summarize on one page a large amount
of information relating to the family. A genogram is a bio-psychosocial
family tree(family pedigree, genealogic chart). It provides a diagram of
the family structure, medical history, family relationships, and critical
events. It also shows where the family is in its life cycle.
The components of a genogram include the following :
1) Three or more generations.
2) The names of all family members.
3) Age or year of birth of all family members.
4) Any deaths, including age at or date of death and cause.
5) Significant diseases or problems of family members.
6) Indication of members living together in the same household.
7) Dates of marriage & divorce.
8) Symbols selected for simplicity & maximum visibility.
Uses of genogram:
1) Allowing the physician to review quickly the family situation thereby
improving continuing comprehensive care.
2) Identifying the significant risk factors among family members.
3) Recognizing the need of screening in patients who are at high risk.
4) Promoting lifestyle changes & placing greater emphasis on patient
education.
5) Demonstrating that family relationships are a concern of the family
physician & important to the health of each family member.
