THE PROBLEM AND ITS SETTING

Introduction

Student learning, and more specifically, setting the right tone of learning, begins
moment a student enters the school buildings, not just when he or she crosses the
classroom threshold. It is important for the students to have a proper and organized
arrangement of the classroom for it has a great effect on the students behaviour. A
students learning experience is impacted by the classroom structure around them.
Basically things such as classroom lighting, the colour of the room, their air quality, the
layout and the quality of the furniture all affects the students.

classroom structure influenced student achievement goal orientation for

mathematics. Three elementary school classes were assigned randomly to 1 classroom
structure condition: token economy, contingency contract, or control. Students in each
condition were required to set individual achievement goals on a weekly basis. The
authors assessed differences in goal orientation by comparing the number of learning vs.
performance goals that students set within and across classroom structure conditions.
Results indicated that students in the contingency-contract condition set significantly
more learning goals than did students in other classroom structure conditions. No
significant differences were found for performance goals across classroom structure
conditions. Within classroom structure conditions, students in the contingency-contract
group set significantly more learning goals than performance goals, whereas students in
the token-economy condition set significantly more performance goals than learning goals

Today, Senior High School Students of Cantilan National High School has a classic
learning management systems that everyone knows about what we have to consider. A
lot of changes happen and it is important to be aware to the things that surrounds us.
Especially, students suffers complicated and difficulties in life because of the additional
two years of schooling.

Student life has been not that much so easy for a lot of requirements are required
to have a good grades also an amount of effort must be added. So we the researchers
are giving our best to conduct this study which is very helpful to us to understand how are
things could affect our behaviour in our classroom and school. This study takes purposes
focusing on the effects of the Classroom Structure to the learnings of Senior High School

Conceptual Frame Work

Every classroom shall be suitably structured and decorated to make the

surroundings of pupils/students conducive to learning. The materials for structuring and
decorating shall be selected on the basis of their educational value providing opportunities
for class discussions. Likewise, its cleanliness and orderliness must be maintained, the
fact that this is a vital aspect contributing to the educational growth of the pupils/students

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter presents the related literature, related study and related
readings for clear understanding with the present study. Also this provides an
effective background of the Study.

Foreign Studies

Kyle Vanhemert stated his study over the (2011–12 academic year), with
751 students in 34 classrooms, spread across seven primary schools in the
seaside town of Blackpool, England. After collecting data on the students’
performance levels going into the school year, the researchers, comprising faculty
from the University of Salford School of the Built Environment, in Manchester,
England, as well as collaborators from the architecture firm Nightingale Associates,
ranked each classroom on a 1 to 5 scale for 10 different design parameters: light,
sound, temperature, air quality, choice, flexibility, connection, complexity, color,
and texture. Each of these parameters were broken down into a few
considerations. Light, for example, included the amount of natural light entering
the classroom, as well as the teacher’s ability to manually control the level of
lighting; flexibility took into consideration how well a given classroom could
accommodate pupils without crowding them, in addition to how easily its furniture
could be rearranged for a variety of activities and teaching approaches. There is,
of course, the matter of the teacher, though the paper points out that the multilevel
statistical model used to crunch the data, which looks at the correlation between
the variables and student progress across classrooms, actually buffers against
their influence to a large extent.
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Demirdjian (2004) said also that educators seem to be always

experimenting with new pedagogical variables in the permutation of enhancing
students’ learning. In the humanities and social sciences, the major variables have
been psychological, sociological, and technological in nature. Very recently,
another variable has been proposed as a new paradigm to enhance students’
learning. The new approach is based on classroom policy matters formulated by
the instructor for the class to observe. Collectively, these policy matter
requirements are deemed to constitute a classroom structure (Classroom Structure
on Students’ Learning June12-14 2004. )

According Ryan Hannah (2013) the various skills deemed necessary and
proper for them to achieve success in the global society. The classroom is where
they will gain an understanding of their place in the world and the gifts that they
have to offer it. It is where the student develops what they want their future to look
like, as well as knowledge of the skills needed to reach that goal. With the
classroom being such an important place in the growth of a child it is important to
understand the ways in which to affect this environment in order to receive
maximum effectiveness in instruction. If schools really do play a large role in
teaching the next generation how to be successful members of society then every
precaution should be taken to make sure that the learning environment is one that
helps students thrive. If not approached correctly, a classroom can be set up in a
way that stifles creativity or does not promote a positive learning environment.
There are many things that can affect this environment. There are physical
elements such as wall art, arrangement of desks, or resources. Also, there are
intangible elements such as the energy of the classroom, the rules, or the sounds
within the room. Each of these can impact a student’s focus and achievement in
the class. They can also affect a teacher’s attitude in the class. Included in each
of these elements of the classroom is the emotional
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS

environment. The way in which a teacher organizes their class, or how they control
it, will yield positive or negative consequences for their students. If a teacher is
unmotivated or negative there will be a direct impact on the students within the
classroom. Similarly, if a teacher is motivated and positive they will likely have a
beneficial impact on their students as well. It is important for a teacher to
understand this cause and effect in order to understand how to organize their
classroom to create a better learning environment. In this paper, I will investigate
several classroom adaptations and argue that their strengths outweigh their
weaknesses.

Andrew Scanlan ( June 29, 2016) Helping Children Succeed: What Works
and Why, expands on these ideas by asking: “Now that we know this, what do we
do?” The book’s central tenet is that educators must compensate for the
shortcomings in a student’s home environment in order to foster his character
strengths. Tough argues that character can’t be taught in the same way as math:
“There’s no evidence that any particular curriculum or textbook or app can
effectively teach kids grit or self-control.” Rather, such qualities are presented as
psychological attributes that are products of a child’s home, daycare, and school.

Tough draws on new research from the fields of neuroscience, education, early
childhood development, and psychology to highlight the effects of “toxic stress”
caused by unstable home and family settings. These problems manifest in school
through cycles of anxiety, depression, and self-destructive behavior.

The book’s strength is its effective and succinct depiction of what successful
environmental changes should look like. In his chapters on the home, Tough
highlights simple day-to-day interventions (such as positive parent-child
interactions and home visiting programs) that can leave a lasting, positive impact
on children. Additionally, some models (such as the Chicago School Readiness
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Project) have been successful in raising preschoolers’ achievement in English and

math by building positive student-teacher relationships.

It’s this interaction between the “relationship” and “pedagogical” spheres that is
needed in the K–12 environment, says Tough. The best teachers tap into a
student’s intrinsic motivators, such as positive relationships, autonomy, and sense
of belonging; but they also exploit extrinsic motivators like grades and future
college success. The evidence (like the Expeditionary Learning Education
Network’s focus on project-based and cooperative learning) indicates that there
are plenty of academic benefits to be derived from encouraging students to
develop strong bonds with teachers and peers.

Tough seeks to empower schools and teachers to make the kind of “disruptive
innovations”—bottom-up reforms—that my colleague Mike Petrilli
has recently championed. Using a rich variation in case studies, he shows that
there are many ways of shaping a child’s environment at the classroom level.

Synthesis of Review Related Literature

The above related literature studies offers significant bearing to present

investigation in as much as they discuss the impact of the effects of Classroom design to
the students learning. As we gathered the previous related literature first study states also
of the design parameters: light, sound, temperature, air quality, choice, flexibility,
connection, complexity, color, and texture. Each of these parameters were broken down
into a few considerations. Light, for example, included the amount of natural light entering
the classroom, as well as the teacher’s ability to manually control the level of lighting;
flexibility took into consideration how well a given classroom could accommodate pupils
without crowding them, in addition to how easily its furniture could be rearranged for a
variety of activities.

However, each of these can impact a student’s focus and achievement in the class.
They can also affect a teacher’s attitude in the class. Included in each of these elements
of the classroom is the emotional environment. The way in which a teacher organizes
their class, or how they control it, will yield positive or negative consequences for their
students. If a teacher is unmotivated or negative there will be a direct impact on the
students within the classroom. Similarly, if a teacher is motivated and positive they will
likely have a beneficial impact on their students as well. It is important for a teacher to
understand this cause and effect in order to understand how to organize their classroom
to create a better learning environment. In this paper, I will investigate several classroom
adaptations and argue that their strengths outweigh their weaknesses.

Another relation matter about this study is that It has long been known that various
aspects of the built environment impact on people in buildings, but this is the first time a
holistic assessment has been made that successfully. For the different ideas
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

and thoughts of this concludes more sufficient helps about the relation of this study.
Although student grades and academic achievements are the largest pointers to the

success of your classroom design, it is also important not to overlook the intangible
pointers that are harder to measure; attitudes to learning, motivation and social skills.

A successful classroom design needs to strike the balance between the teaching
methods and learning styles that take place in the space. Combining learning and
teaching (two entirely different activities in our opinion) helps to create a learning
environment that facilitates both the student and the teacher, thereby creating a more
fulfilling learning experience. The Articles above are so much been helpful and useful to
conduct our research study for it allows to open up our minds if there is a significant
effects of Classroom design to the Students learning.

Data analysis and Interpretation

When we conducted our study, we found out that students have different thought

about classroom structure. It was said that classroom structure is four-walled spaces

specifically consist of chairs, tables, blackboard, high ceiling, the good atmosphere and

the seating arrangement of the classroom and other material that aid the visual needs.

Student A shared her thoughts:

Classroom structuring is the way the room is being arranged and organized.
Good classroom structuring serves as a big foundation for the learning of
students may result to the improvement of their studies.

Meanwhile, Student H shared his points about Classroom Structuring, and he said:

Plastar dapat sija tapos occupy tanan kami mga students, tapos safe
conducive sanan pleasant sa mga estudyante.

It should be well arranged and it can occupy all of us studentsto be safe and
conducive classroom so that it is pleasant for the students.

On the other hand, Student I supported Student H’s points and he said:
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Para sa ako rajaw ang pagkaplastar nan amo classroom tungod kay
kumpleto ang amo facilities. Ang amo Bulletin Board, makita ang tanan, ang

For me, Our classroom is well-arranged. It’s because of we have complete

facilities. Our Bulletin board, everything you can see, the NDEP, also the
subjects and the possible holidays because we have lists even in school
days.

At the same time, Student E shared her thoughts about classroom structure , and
he said:

It is to design the classroom in order to make it presentable and child friendly

environment classroom.

However, Student F replied to Student E’s thoughts with the same question and
she said:

Sanan isab an pagka plastar nan classroom apil an mga seating

arrangements and the atmosphere ng classroom.

And also classroom’s arrangement especially seating arrangements then

the atmosphere of the classroom.

On the other side, Student J shared her points about classroom structuring, and she
said:

Dapat sab an desinyo ng classroom kay high ceiling sija, limpyo sanan dili
baho na classroom.

The classroom structuring must be high ceiling, clean and odourless.

CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

With the same question, Student G shared his thoughts:

An classroom dili raman kon an classroom tag desinyohan para sa mga

pananlitan sa ila panhibayo sanan mahibay an o madevelop unoy mga

Classroom is designed not only to be a learning centered but also to be a

child-friendly environment that enable the students to developed their
positive mind set through social interaction what part are they in the school
and the society.

The students shared how important classroom structure to the students learning.

They also explained the classroom structuring is very vital in learning aspect for it serves

us the place to learn and adopt new knowledge and ideas.

Student A shared her idea and said:

Classroom structuring is important because I believe that classroom is

aroom for learning and that is should be well taken care of and that’s should

be a room for students to properly study.

However, Student E slightly opposed the idea of Student A’s about the same question,

and she said:

CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Physically it won’t help but mentally it can. If the mind of the student is at

peace because of the clean surroundings, balanced decorations, and the

ambience of the room that it gives of then it will be easy for the student to

think of its lesson.

At the same time, Student C supported Student E’S thoughts about the importance od

classroom structuring, and he said:

In terms of the classroom setting, it is always foremost and crucial as it can

adhere contributing factors of how learners are taken into shape. As long

as the setting of classroom standards are met for the students; necessity,

all is fine.

On the other side, Student B shared and she declaired:

Seating arrangements is I think the most important kay this affects the

students learning example. Example an mga taga likod di makakita or uno

ba.

Seating arrangement is I think is the most important for this affects the

students’ learning. For example, people who were at the back if there are

studenst who can’t normally see far from them.

With same question, Student I shared and explained:

CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

Classroom structuring is very important. It is because it gives us the

surroundings that are suitable to their taste and be able us to feel at ease.

On the other and, Student D also shared about the same question, and he said:

Importante gajud an disenyo sa classroom, kay panglitan pa gang

classroom kay gamay puydi jaun makahatag ng negatibo na epekto sa mga

estudyante kay basin sakagamay ng classroom gamay ra an puydi

matudloan.

Classroom structuring is very important, for example when the classroom is

small it can be a factor that can have negative effect on students learning

because of having a small classroom few students only are gaining

knowledge and a lot of chances are being wasted.

The students shared the effects of not having well-structured classroom. They also

explained as revealed a while ago that students will feel uncomfortable insde the

classroom. It will not be easier to absorb the lesson and can brought distraction by its

environment.

Student D declaaired:
CANTILAN NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL
SCIENCE TECHNOLOGY ENGINEERING AND MATHEMATICS
Cantilan, Surigao del Sur

It can badly affect the learnings in many ways like lack of attention in class,

not even bothering to go to class and unstable behaviour in class.

Student F supported Student D’s idea, and she said:

It could also probably lead to distraction of factors from keeping the students

attentive in class.

Meanwhile, Student H explained his thoughts, and he said:

Kuan jaun kibale gamay ra an chance na makatarong an panalinga sanan

pag study ng mga estudyante, kondili sakto sanan tarong ang pagkaplastar

sanan pagdesinyo ng classroom. Kuan sab basin dili kon

structured and not organized. If it’s not safe there there will be possibility

that can affect the student learning by not getting attentive in class since

part of the learning of the students the classroom structuring it will help them

to get focused and they will feel comfortable in any lesson and activities that

their teacher will give to them if classroom is well-structured.

With the same question, Student G shared his thoughts:

Maapektohan eni ang possible na dili kaw ganahan mutungha kay dili
sija comfortable sa classroom. Ikaduha maapektohan isab ang ila pamaagi
sa klasi kay dikon tarong ang pagkaplastar or pagdesinyo ng classroom.

It will affect the possible factor of not going to class for they’re not

comfortable in their classroom. Second it will affect the way of not being

attentive in class because of not well-structured classroom.

On the other hand, student B shared her points:

Dili kaw ma proud saem classroom as a student tapos kung gana an

pagkaplastar ang ijo room bgan dili kaw masipog kung jaoy mga visitor na

musuyod sa ijo room. Kanang sab ma disspaoint kaw tapos dikaw ganahan

You will feel not proud. If your classroom look so mess and not well

structured. If also the visitors will visit your classroom and it is well-

structured you’ll not feel ashamed. But if you’re classroom is not well-

structured it could to distraction that you don’t want to listen and attentive in

class.

In addition to this, Student J shared her idea and explained:

I could possibly receive low grades because a not well-structured classroom

means an unknowledgeable environment. And I think that it will possibly be

one of the reasons why I can’t study well. Also, I think if the classroom is

not well taken care of it would greatly affect the studies of the students.
