Directors Notebook Hedda Gabler

The document outlines a final project assignment for students to complete Hedda Gabler. Students will work in groups of 2-3 to create a director's notebook and perform a scene from the play. The director's notebook must include decorative cover, table of contents, script with notations, character analyses, costume designs, set designs, and optional music. Groups will then perform their scene in class, being graded on rehearsal, memorization, blocking, use of set/props, emotion, and understanding of characters/plot.

Hedda Gabler – Final Project

Assignment
You will choose a group of two-three people. Your group will create a DIRECTOR’S NOTEBOOK (100 POINTS)
which has specific requirements and also PERFORM A SCENE (100 POINTS) from the play. The director’s
notebook and scene will count as your final assessment for this unit.

PART 1 – THE DIRECTOR’S NOTEBOOK (100 points)

All good theater companies must do a great deal of planning for a successful performance. We
are adapting all that hard work into one written product called your “director’s notebook”.
For each section, please follow the directions and make a note of which group member will be
responsible.

Required Contents of the Notebook

1. Decorative Cover with the Name of the Play and Group Members

Group Member Responsible:_________________

 May be hand drawn or computer generated.

 Should be clear, neat, artistic, and colorful

2. Table of Contents Group Member Responsible:_____________________

 This should preferably be typed, and state what each section in the notebook is and what page it can be found on.

3. Script: Group Member Responsible: _________________

Please either print out or make enough copies of the specific scene you plan to use for each member of your group. ONE
copy of the scene should be placed into the director’s notebook. The scene should be approximately 5 pages and take
approximately 5 minutes to perform. On the script you should notate the following:

 Blocking
 Change in emotional tone for your character
 Gestures and facial expressions (those that appear in the stage directions and those you come up with yourself)

4. Costumes: Group Member Responsible: _________________

Please design two costumes for each character in your scene. The first costume is your IDEAL COSTUME – imagine you
are directing this play on Broadway – what would you wear? Why? The second costume is the ACTUAL COSTUME- what
CAN you wear? What do you have at home that will evoke your character on stage? Underneath each costume, please write
a short paragraph describing why you selected what you did.

3. Character Analyses: Group Member Responsible: _________________

Each group member will write a one page, typed character analysis of his/her character in the scene. You are considering
what your character feels, wants, and is able to get IN THIS SCENE ONLY, not over the course of the entire play. Some
topics to explore would be:
 What are your character’s personality traits?
 Why is this character involved in this scene?
 What does this character hope to achieve in this scene?

1 Ms. Klemstine
 How does the character go about getting what he/she needs in this scene?
 How does my character feel before, during, and after this scene takes place?
4. Set and Props: Group Member Responsible: _________________

This is the same as costumes. You will design one IDEAL set using a bird’s eye view of the stage. What would it look like if
you directed the play on Broadway? The second set should be the ACTUAL set and props. What will you actually use when
you perform either in class or the Little Theater? Underneath each drawing, please explain your choices.

5. Music (Optional) Group Member Responsible: _________________

If you like, and you think it would be effective, you may use music and/or sound effects at various points in your scene.
Make a list of what you would like to use, when, and how you will play it.

PART 2: THE PERFORMANCE (1OO points)

We will spend one week in class rehearsing and blocking our scenes once we have completed the
director’s notebook. The end goal is to perform the scenes in the Little Theater in front of our class.
We will perform the scenes chronologically as they appear in the play.

You may choose any scene from Hedda Gabler to perform with your group.

Here are the requirements for scenes:

1) Must work in groups of 2-3

2) Scene must be approximately 4 pages (five minutes)
3) Each group should select a different scene to do, and that will be first come first serve.
4) You should memorize your lines to the best of your ability. An option is to give me the script on the day
of your performance, and call for a “line” if you forget something. This is what real actors do.
5) Your performance will be graded on the level of your emotion, your blocking, your effective use of the
set and props, how well you convey the plot and important elements of the scene, and your overall
effort.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: HAVE FUN! This project is very rewarding, and I want you to work hard and enjoy
yourselves!
