A multigrade classroom, also known as a multi-age classroom, consists of students from two or more grade levels taught together in one classroom. There are opportunities for both students and teachers in this environment. Students can learn from peers in different grades and styles, while teachers can get to know students better and experiment with experience-based teaching strategies suited to different ages. However, multigrade classrooms also present challenges for teachers, such as requiring more preparation of tailored learning materials and careful monitoring of student progress across grade levels. Effective classroom management, including clear rules and individualized praise, is also important to maintain discipline with a multigrade group.

MULTI GRADE CLASS

A multigrade classroom refers to a class that has two or more grade level in
one classroom. It is also called a multi-age group because it consist of different
ages of students. There are many opportunities for learners in multigrade-class.
There will be a social interaction between different grades of students. The
students who weren’t able to go to nursery or kinder can have the opportunity to
learn what others have learned in that grade. They can learn with each other’s
different styles. Some students can assume that they are the leader inside the
classroom because they are ahead or older than their classmates so they can
learn how to be independent and they will be prepared to be self-directed. As
for teacher’s opportunity, she can get to know more about her students, she will
innovate different strategies for teaching that suit for this organization. The
teacher will have more opportunities to experiment for experienced based and
activity centered because of the different ages and grades of her students. There
are many challenges for the teacher to handle in this multigrade class. It requires
more preparation for curriculum learning materials, the teacher has to be
effective, more strategic and genuine in preparing her learning materials. It
requires more careful on student’s learning development characteristics
especially they are in different levels, teacher will have more investment for
learning materials and the teacher will be challenged to monitor the progress of
different levels of student at a time.

Discipline can be a problem inside the classroom. One of its reason is the
teacher’s way of teaching. If you can’t get the attention of your student then
they will not learn at all. It is indeed difficult to gain the respect of your students
and that will lead to failure as a teacher. As an effective teacher you should do
your very best to touch your students heart. To have a good discipline inside the
classroom, first explain your classroom rules. This is very important because
students will remember your rules. Let your students to sit where he/she pleased as
long as you know that he/she will not be distracted. She/he can learn more if he is
comfortable with his area. Give a student your genuine praise if she did well and
keep on motivating her/him. Don’t punish the whole class just because of the
mistake of one or more students. Having an inclusive classroom is much better.
Avoid to be favoritism teacher. And make sure that the used language can be
understand by everyone.

Being a student in a multigrade classroom does not negatively affect

academic performance, social relationships, or attitudes. They are doing what
other students do. There are more efforts that the teacher have to push compare
to the teacher who teaches one grade only. This organization aims to bridge the
problems on education and to achieve the aim of education for all.
