Student’s opinion regarding teaching methods: among students of nursing
school of People Medical Collage and Hospital Nawab Shah
ABSTRACT
A cross-sectional study was conducted in nursing School of People Medical College and hospital Nawab
Shah among diploma course students opinion regarding teaching method. Simple random sampling
technique was utilized with collection at sept todecumber 2018 on a sample of 20 students self
administrated close ended question was used for that purpose descriptive analysis was applied for
numerical data while using mean standard deviation for different variable.
study result showed that 60%of participate preferred discussion method in their nursing education 15%
of participant agreed about lecture method is also help to enhance the learning and 10% participant agree
with clinical teaching and only 5% was agree of questioning technique.
According to nursing student discussion method is most significance tool for learning of nursing
education
INTRODUCTION
Teaching is one of the main elements in educational process. A teacher and student work
together to make information sharing process easier and pleasant for interpretation. Effective
learning and teaching should be based on a logical approach to find out the problem and to
address those areas of difficulties faced by the student. Therefore it has been more important to
implement an approach in teaching and learning to meet the student needs.( Diane Young , Sherry
Seibenhener)
Traditional teaching method in which student has to concentrate on note taking and listening, as
usual teacher consistently present the content in lecture type monologue, which is not sufficient
to increase student interest, Lecture indicated to one sided spoken continuously about selected
topic, lecture is a just like time table where student were taught to certain content to large group
of student at one time.
Lecture method in which an instructor has to focus a topic to transmit to the students. Normally, the
presenter has to present certain knowledge to studentslearn, as usual they will use black board overhead
projector. Students only take notes and listen passively. Therefore very little exchange of information
occurs between students and teacher.( shin, shok ,hyun and kim 2015 )
Another study suggested that active teaching method might increase students participation and
make the learning more effective in nursing education “innovative teaching method were
appreciated by the student when traditional method and innovative method both were
demonstrated before than in a pilot study the research attempted to assess the learning perception
of under graduate students about traditional method and innovative method. Self-directed
learning was appreciated, because student viewed that self-directed learning method is motivated
in teaching method. (SailaxmiGandhi 2015 )
Study illustrated that the students remained positive and comfort with innovative education as
compare to traditional. The research assess the student in comparative study student views was
clearly defined the student learn passively by lecture method and dominated on the teacher
centered information there was no opportunity given for brain storming and interpretation of
problem in contrast PBL was noticed by the researcher, by student result PBL felt student to
enhance critical thinking, make well equipped students for professional journey (Julie jay 2014).
Accordingly the survey study conducted at America University the perception of students about
lecture method by using likert scale for gathering data, the research finding was conform views
of students continuously act positively of lecture method, reason was they pay fees to be taught
by teacher not for that they seek information by their own effort, the view was lecture method
provide direction toward subject at initial step without anxiety (Alex Amartie 2014)
According to these above studies clearly illustrated most of student all over the world preferred
problem based learning to improve the critical thinking and demonstrate active participate in
nursing education, but the aim of this study will be describe the view of nursing students about
teaching methodology in people medical collage girls nursing school.
Significance of study
The quality of education is the base to produce the knowledge and make productive lives of our
nation the quality of learning is depends upon students learning strategies. It could be cognitive
or self modifiable. Therefore the perception of students regarding teaching methodology is more
significance this study helped to find deficiency in to the teaching methods which improved and
found the drawbacks because of that student unable to learn skills and implanted new methods or
teaching strategy in delivering nursing education for that gap of knowledge had filled up. several
study found student perception regarding teaching methods many research the students were
demanding innovate learning which increased their critical thinking self-directed leaning also
promoted.

Literature review
The review of literature aim to found preferences of teaching strategy in nursing education as
providing nursing education is preparing as a new technology is developed. There is no any
single static teaching strategy to meet the learner needs.
by (Shin shon hyon 2015 instructor are realize that the traditional lecture is not only one method
in which student can learn, there are many choices introduced for the lecture as the case study,
role plying and simulation sanerio given to new way of delivering nursing education.
Another study talk about PBL method by Aynalem abebe department of management for the
betterment of education by applying influential teaching method in that way of student
preferences is important to achieve effective teaching and learning process. as many student like
to use both teaching method, teacher-centered and student centered in high education system.
The teacher -centered method are lecture and demonstration commonly used and student -
centered such as discussion , presentation , brain storming, case study, questioning problem
solving and roll playing as well used. For effective learning student preferences is most
important for improving learning at appropriate learning environment.
According to (Alex amartie research indicates the student views towards traditional method the
study had confirmed that mostly students like to dominated on the lecture method reason was
student pay fees to taught by teacher without using their own effort to seeking the study material
tha(t may lead to anxiety. could not manage the huge material in class time avoid the student to
work on their own effort.
By (Julie jay 2014) the study encouraged toward the innovate educational system required to
develop the student, the PBL is a teaching method aim to supporting active participant enable to
getting new skills for practical position PBL is an instructional method which enhance to clinical
reasoning skills however the study identify the many student prefer the traditional lecture based
method also has great contribution to teaching and learning.
There was one of longitudinal study conducted for evaluating the effectiveness of PBL it was 8
year study since 1994 at teaching and learning department the study got good result that PBL
strategy is to help student to think critically and become long life learner
According to the literature the problem based learning method is great element of today’s
curriculum student to be aware of first year than it will encourage to student four year of study.
Methodology
1. Research design
A cross-sectional applied to School of nursing People’s Medical College and Hospital Nawab
shah. The aim of study is to describe preferences and perception of nursing student about
teaching methods .The study participator were nursing student of first year, 2nd year students, and
3rd.year
2. Population
Population of this study will be nursing students from School Of Nursing People Medical
Collage and Hospital Nawab Shah.
3. Sampling techniques
Students were select by simple random sampling method and structured question had given to
the students after accessing consent from students in written, the question were on the perception
and preferences about teaching method which implement for theory and clinical teaching the
assessment of student preferences towards teaching method had done by using likert scale
(5=strongly agree, 4=agree, 3=neutral, 2=not agree, 1=strongly disagree)
4. Sample
A sample of 20 nurse student taken for cross sectional study there must be large sample size
which may helpful to identify the perception and preferences of teaching methodology among
students of people medical collage of nursing school but there was because of limited number of
students in this study sample size were 20 students.
5. Instrument
In this study researcher used self-developed questionnaire for obtaining information from
respondent the questionnaire had consist of 5 close ended questions.
7. Data analysis:
The collected data analyzed manually express by simply drawing frequencies and percentage of
each variable.
8. Ethical consideration
Written consent was given from participant they provided autonomy for the study and
confidentiality remained secreted.

Discussion
Teaching and learning environment is the sensory pathway in which students usually acquired and retain
the knowledge , good teaching strategy make comfort and informative environment in which student can
learn if learning environment may easy and informative will be increase student interest. The study
conducted at nursing school to know the students preferences regarding teaching strategy which strategy
they preferred in which they learn professional skill the age range of students between 18 to 24 slandered
deviations was 2.557 mean age of the participant was 20.15 the result was in 100%.the result of this study
indicate that the most of students like discussion method along with lecture and clinical teaching method
moreover ,students perceived that they learn by lecture clinical teaching but if discussion occur while
lecture then they learn more additionally the discussion method help them to enhance subject knowledge
more ,its being observed by the questionnaire student preferred discussion method more than other, it is
more beneficial and informative technique acquiring knowledge.
By Aynalem (2015) found out that student learn a lot by the discussion ,problem solving ,and brain
storming method whereas the lecture method was least interested reason included ,that teacher centered
method had not given opportunity to expressed their own feelings and also decreased student participation
student learn passively hence ,student centered learning preferred more as discussion ,problem solving,
brain storming, role playing , and questioning technique make students increase critical thinking, and
Alex Amartie(2014) reported student view conformed toward lecture method lecture method is one of the
most dominated method in teaching area ,and the lecture method continue preferred due to its time
saving help to increased student participation its appropriate for presenting material that may difficult to
search and understand for students, zewar Raza (2018) research illustrated medical student mostly
preferred clinical teaching technique enhance learning and being motivated by clinical teaching .
Conclusion
The basis of this research mostly student preferred discussion method in nursing education, the research
also shown that students learn a lot by discussion another teaching methods also good such as lecture
method and clinical teaching help to understand the subject material but if discussion occur between
teacher and student, discussion has been given freedom to express their feeling and knowledge about
subject and by this student never be for gate information retained for long time.
Suggestion
The study proof that the discussion method will be more helpful to understanding retain the material for
long period in which student will be confidently talk express the knowledge about subject matter it should
be included in nursing education which will be beneficial and informative it will make student better
way to communicate.
