Couplings
7.1. Coupling and its applications:
A coupling can be defined as a mechanical device that permanently joins two rotating shafts to each
other. The main applications of couplings are;

Difference between a coupling and a clutch is that: A coupling is used to connect driver and driven
shaft permanently or temporarily while a clutch connect or disconnects the driving shaft from the
driven shaft at the will of the operator i.e. (whenever operator wishes while vehicle is still driving).

7.4. Design of Muff/Sleeve Coupling:
(Muff is also called sleeve) In Muff coupling the sleeve is used which doesn’t have bolts but in Split
muff coupling, the muff is made in two halves and are bolted together.
