Early Athenian Education: TH TH

Early Athenian education was influenced by Solon and based on his laws. Later, after Athens' victory in war, attitudes toward education changed. Athenian education included various types of training by different philosophers - the Sophists focused on pragmatic skills; Socrates emphasized thinking; Plato wanted intellectual rulers; and Aristotle promoted rational living. Education also provided moral, professional, intellectual, vocational, domestic, physical, and aesthetic training as well as science, philosophy, literature and sports.

EARLY ATHENIAN EDUCATION

 During 7th TO 4th century B.C.


 Under the influence of Solon- the greatest lawmaker of all
time.
 Laws became the bases for the educational direction of
Athens.

LATER ATHENIAN EDUCATION


 Athens, the head of the Delian Confederation, contributed
largely to the victory.

 The triumph brought about attitudinal changes toward


education among Athenians.

I. CONTENT
1. By the Sophists, pragmatic and utilitarian.
To prepare the individual for personal advancement through the
utilization of persuasive powers and the analysis of new
demands for success in a cosmopolitan setting.
To cultivate the individual’s public image and individual’s
excellence for individual conquest.
To develop adeptness in the skills most useful for his personal
advancement and political preferment.
2. By Socrates, development of the power of thinking
To develop the power of thinking.
To enable humanity to arrive at fundamental concepts or moral
principles of the universe.
To establish that morality is based on knowledge and virtue.
3. By Plato, control by intellectual rulers
To produce a social order or system controlled by intellectual
rulers.
 To develop individuals natural talent.
4. By Aristotle, rational living
To produce or promote rational living.
Moral Training. Sophist claimed that the measure of the truth
was the individual. He decides for him what is true
Professional Training. This was for public speaking.
Intellectual Training. This was an aim of Socrates and Plato,
an intellectual training of the highest form and truth.
Vocational Training. This was for the craftsmen and laborers.
Domestic Training. This was for the girls for housekeeping
purposes.
Physical, military and civic training. This was lessoned.
Science and philosophy education. This was espoused by
Aristotle, particularly the teaching of logic.
Aesthetic and cultural education. Literature, grammar,
rhetoric, art and music were studied for enjoyment and not for
ennobling and moral purposes.
Sports and games. These were taken for enjoyment and not for
ennobling purposes.
