Observation is one of the greatest powers in the
universe

Hi kids, today we will learn about


Verbs and the different ways they are
formed. After that, we will learn
about the two types of verbs: Main
Verbs and Helping Verbs.

At the end of the lesson, you will be


able to identify the types of verbs
and use them correctly in sentences.
1. VERBS

DEFINITION
Verbs are words or group of words that
refer to actions and states (including our
thoughts and feelings).

EXAMPLE

Classification of Verbs:

1 According to their functions in a sentence:

 Main Verbs.
 Helping Verbs.
 Transitive, intransitive, ditransitive and
complex Verbs.

2. MAIN VERBS

DEFINITION
Main verbs express the action or state of
the subject. Without a main verb, a
sentence will be incomplete. Main verbs are
sometimes called lexical verbs.

EXAMPLE

A main verb changes its form according to its
subject.
Types of Subject Examples

Singular Grizzi lives in Black Desert.


Grizzi and her family live in Black
Plural
Desert.
First person I live in Black Desert.
Second person You live in Black Desert.
Third person She lives in Black Desert.

A main verb also changes its form according to the


tense.
Types of Subject Examples

Simple present tense Daka cleans his room daily.


Simple past tense Daka cleaned his room yesterday.
Present continuous
Daka is cleaning his room now.

Daka has cleaned his room.

DEFINITION
Helping verbs are usually used before
verbs. Helping verbs are sometimes called
auxiliary verbs. Some helping verbs may be
used as main verbs. Helping verbs can be
categorised into primary helping verbs and
modal helping verbs.

1 Be is used to form the continuous or future


continuous tenses and passive voice.
The fish is swimming in the pond.

2 Have is used to form the perfect tense.

Zoka and Zepo have travelled to many countries to
film documentaries.

3 Do is used to form negative sentences or questions


and to show emphasis.

I did enjoy the musical very much!

Be, have and do often act as main verbs too.

DEFINITION
Modal helping verbs are used before the
base form of verbs to help express meanings
such as ability, possibility, permission
and obligation.

Can, could, shall, should, would, must, ought to, will,


may and might.

EXAMPLE

The one-year old toddler can walk on his own already!


All of us ought to do our part to save the earth.
Roxy may join us if she has nothing else going on.

• Main verbs or lexical verbs express the


action or state of the subject.
SUMMARY • Helping verbs or auxiliary verbs are usually
used before main verbs.

2 Linking Verbs

DEFINITION
We use linking verbs to connect the subject
of a sentence to a subject complement. A
subject complement describes or identifies
the subject and can be a noun complement or
adjective complement.

EXAMPLE
She is Indian (noun complement).
I feel lethargic (adjective complement) without my
coffee.
Zinka appeared pale and weak (adjective complement).
Simba remained silent (adjective complement) after
hearing the shocking news.

3 Sensing Verbs

DEFINITION
We use sensing verbs to describe
perceptions related to the five senses.

EXAMPLE

I saw the little girl shouting for help.


Please listen to her instructions.
I tasted the chocolate running down my chin.

4 Mental Verbs

DEFINITION
We use mental verbs to describe the way a
person thinks.

EXAMPLE

You may think you know best, but please consider this
proposal.
The girls realised that they were in trouble.
I guess you made the right decision.

How could I ever forget that wonderful camping trip!

5 Feeling Verbs

DEFINITION
We use feeling verbs to describe how a
person feels towards someone or something.

EXAMPLE

Poha loves dogs, but her mother hates them.


I admire firefighters for their courage to risk their
lives to save others.
Many pupils respect Mr. Drago because he is an
understanding teacher.

We use verbs of possession to describe
ownership.

1. REGULAR VERBS

DEFINITION
Most verbs are regular. We can add endings
such as –s, -ed and –ing to change their
forms.

another topic on Verbs called
Transitive, Intransitive and
Ditransitive Verbs.

At the end of the lesson, you will be


able to identify these forms of verbs
and use them correctly in sentences.

1. TRANSITIVE, INTRANSITIVE,
DITRANSITIVE VERBS

DEFINITION
Transitive verbs are verbs which take
objects. The action described by the verb
is done to the object. Sentences with
transitive verbs are incomplete without an
object. A transitive verb needs an object
to make sense.

Here some examples of transitive verbs:

Intransitive verbs are verbs which do not
take an object. The sentences make sense
even without an object.

Ditransitive verbs are verbs which take two
objects a direct object and an indirect
object.
