Synopsis

The document provides an introduction and synopsis for a research project on combining an orphanage and old age home. It discusses the benefits of such a merger in reducing loneliness for both elderly people and orphans. By living together, the elderly could provide care, affection and guidance to the children, while the children's company could help alleviate psychological pain in the elderly. The project aims to create an interactive space where the two generations can support each other's emotional needs while being cared for in a family-like environment. Careful planning of spaces would be required to accommodate the different needs of each group.

INTRODUCTION
“ Elder people are a treasure of the society ,their rich bag of experience has loads of learning to
offer to all. The fast moving society is undergoing a transformation with more senior citizens
considering living in SENIOR LIVING HOME

Childhood is a tender and delicate stage in the life span of a human being. At this stage people
require a great deal of care, love and nurture in order to have a robust set of values and morals.
The required care, love and nurture are generally imparted to us by our families

Old age homes :-

Old age homes are shelter for millions who are without support. They supported many in their
youth days. They reared their kids with all the love and care that anybody can think of. Now the
children are grown – ups and no longer ‘need’ the support of their aging, weak and demanding
parents. And the parents are not dying ! So they want to get rid of them, in some way, as soon as
possible. They sometimes send them to old age homes, yet another times throw them on road.
They don’t want to afford any expense taken by old age homes also.
The old-age people can spend their last days with the kids as if they are spending good time with
their grandchildren. This is one of the best possible ways to lessen their pain because the old
people(many of them) over there are very much obsessed with their family and they are craving
for their love and come back

Orphanage :-
Orphanages are home for trillions without any background. Most of the kids living there do not
know about their parents or their roots. They are alive on the mercy of some. These ‘some’ may
be selfless or selfish. They might be using these helpless kids for any of their trades including
making money, getting name and fame, organ transplants, theft, murders, mythical ceremonies
and even flesh trade ! Whom will these unfortunate children plead to ? Who will hear them. They
are kids born on earth to serve lacs without anything good in exchange ! They are too scared to
face the world.

None of us has time individually, to look after any ‘left out’ single buddy. Nobody cares about
anyone’s feelings until and unless that buddy is ‘connected’ to this lucky human being. Most of us
are not bothered about removing the pain from society. Among those, who ‘pretend’ to be
concerned, most are working for themselves ! Only a few people are truly devoted to these
rejected, dejected class and masses. But they are too few to manage the whole lot. So, a way can
be designed, to make these neglected class self – sufficient and self – reliant

They get a good company to share things that happened in their school or their day to day life.

They get a good grandparents from whom they can hear stories, values and morals especially the
ones who can really assist them with their studies.

The feeling of nostalgia will definitely be reduced to a greater extent.

I can vouch this idea holds more pros than cons. This is one of the best ideas to implement.
IMPORTANCE OF THE PROJECT IN TODAY, IN INDIAN CONTEXT
IS COMBINING A OLD AGE HOME WITH ORPHANAGE A GOOD IDEA ?

Children and the elderly have very different needs, and merging the two would disastrous,
especially for the children.

The elderly are in the final stages of their lives, and they are declining physical and/or mentally to
the point where they need assistance to live. Although living in a old-age home may not provide
the love and affection that they’d prefer, this lack of constant affection and love is not dangerous to
their wellbeing.

Children, on the other hand, are in the first stages of their lives, are developing physically,
mentally, and emotionally, and have very specific needs. In order to develop into well-adjusted
adults, children need love, affection, and a positive consistent relation with one or two adults who
can meet their physical, emotional, and social needs. This can really only be done through a family
or a family-like environment such as foster care of kinship care.

Orphanages and large group homes can only meet a child’s physical needs, and failing to
adequately meet a child’s emotional and social needs will results in harmful psychological
problems like attachment disorder and inferiority complexes as well as physical problems such as
stunted mental and physical development. These lead to life long problems in the children.

Simply adding the elderly to orphanages, wouldn’t solve the original problem that orphanages
always have: inability to create a family-like environment which meets all a child’s needs.
Combining the two would in fact be even worse as it would promote attachment disorder in the
children as they would be receiving love from a large number of people who only stay in their lives
for a short period of time.

AIMS & OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the study are

1. The old and young will meet each other daily, for some time only. They would not be able to
misuse anybody. Discipline and decency can be maintained. And the benefits of keeping them
together will still be there.
2. The social groups having affiliation to any one group, will still have scope to work for their
betterment.
3. The benefits extended to the children and old might be different. There would be no confusion
for the managements.
4. Helping groups may have to devote less time and energy on both groups, as they are side by
side.
5. With proper supervision, government might have to spend less money. Larger the setup,
smaller the ‘per member’ expenditure. This saved money can be carefully used for the upliftment
of the poor.
6. These members of society would be able to walk with self respect, self confidence and lead a
life with dignity
.

SCOPE
The idea behind this topic is to create:

An interactive platform for old age homes and orphanages : Even if we combine an old age home
with an orphanage we need to have a planned
Space or platform where they both can interact. We can’t always put both the generations
together as they have different priorities.

Careful planning of spaces: It might happen that some of the elder people may have some
contagious diseases. Hence they have to be isolated from the children. Therefore careful planning
is required so that spaces are segregated but are not isolated.

Differently able :It may happen that some of the elder people are differently able and hence need
to be catered. And not just elder people also the children could be differently abled. So the building
should be responsive to such kind of people.

Low cost scheme: Mostly such buildings are funded by NGOs and hence need to be as cost
effective as possible. So techniques of low cost housing will be applied essentially

HYPOTHESIS-
1. The goal would be to establish a mutual relationship. The elderly will act as a parent figure
in the orphans life, and the children would act as young companions to the elderly. They
would live together as a family and support each other physically and emotionally.
2. The home will be supported by administration facilities, recreational activities, community
gathering space, active play and exploration as well as quite gathering and study will also
be facilitated.
3. The project will focus on three major aspects: safety, security and community..

METHODOLOGY.
• To study the relation between two age groups.

• The thesis Home for orphans and Elderly is an endeavour to create space where the two
groups can live together, where one group can provide the other with what they lack..
• Improve quality of life with architectural space.
