Lesson Plan Counting and Adding With Dominoes: Subject Teacher Grade Date

The lesson plan introduces kindergarten students to counting and adding using dominoes. It includes reviewing counting objects, explaining that adding means putting groups together, and having students practice counting and adding sets of counters. Students will then draw dominoes on a worksheet, count the dots on each side, write the numbers in an addition equation, count all the dots, and write the total. The teacher will circulate to ensure students draw the dots correctly and write the right numbers.

Lesson Plan

Counting and Adding With Dominoes

Subject Teacher Grade Date

Math Tanya Tellez K 7-1-17

Objectives:
● Count to tell number of objects (using counters)
● Count in sequence
● Understand adding
● Write out the numbers
Materials:
● Counters
● Dominoes
● Domino template
● Pencil
● Number chart (if needed)
Procedure
1. Review counting objects. We will use counters for this and practice
counting a set of counters. This is to prepare them to count the dots on the
dominoes. (5 minutes)
2. Explain that adding means putting together. For example, count 2 counters
then count 3 more, then count them all together to show that there is 5.
Have them practice taking two sets of counters and then counting them all
together. (5 minutes)
3. Next you will take a copy of the domino template worksheet and do an
example with them. (10 minutes)
○ You will pick out a domino, draw the dots on the domino template,
emphasize that they need to draw the dots exactly the way they look
on the real domino (the same order, ex: five dots is one in each
corner and one in center).
○ Have them count one side of the domino and then write the number
of dots on the first blank of the equation. ( _+_=_ )
○ Repeat with the second side.
○ Next have them count all of the dots and write the answer.
4. Hand out the worksheets and dominoes, start with the simple ones.
5. Walk around to each student to make sure they are drawing the dots in
order and writing the correct numbers. (10 minutes)
6. At the end of the lesson go over one more example and have them lead you
instead of you leading them. (5 minutes)
