THREE YEARS AGO, Koji Satono, 36,
and his wife Mari, 37, decided that they
no longer wanted to be a part of the
relentless bustle of living in the city. The
couple made a bold move. They left
Osaka and moved to the countryside
where life promised to be simpler.
They moved to a small village, a train
ride and then a bus ride away, totalling
a two-hour journey. In their landscape,
Osaka’s gray concrete environs have
given way to lushly mesmerizing green
vistas. In the slower-paced milieu of the
small farming town, it is easy to see
why a city-fied couple chose to make as
drastic a change as Koji and Mari did.
Ayabe is a sleepy town nestled in the
mountains of Kyoto prefecture. But Koji
and Mari’s home is deeper still, further
into the rural countryside. There are no
businessmen in suits and no flicker of
neon lights here. There are just the hours
between dawn and dusk, and people
tilling the land.
In the car, on the way to the village,
Mari talks about her past life, and her
16-month-old son Yuuki listens as

graphic artists who love making old stuff

of his sister’s because he was fascinated
with how it was put together. “I love old-

do things the old way now.”
Word got around about Salud’s
restoration. One day, people who owned
Patria bikes (an old bicycle brand made
in the Philippines) came to Salud and
Tobias. “They asked us to restore their
old Patrias because they don’t make
them anymore.” Until the two set up
their vintage bike shop-slash-graphic art
studio called Hocus, there was no place
where such restoration could be done.

One thing Salud and Tobias lament
about living in the Philippines is the
absence of bike lanes. But the two have
discovered their own routes. Although
not officially marked off, “they are safe,
quiet and scenic,” says Tobias. They
share their discoveries with cyclists
who come to the store. “A group of
bikers come in once a week. Hocus
has become their unofficial place for
a group huddle.” Hocus Bicycles @
