Mad about
Jon Hamm
The Mad Men star is humble, thoughtful,
and unlike the man he plays on TV, not the
least bit like Don Draper — a testimony to his
tremendous dramatic gifts. By Bret Love

JON HAMM’S handsome, All-American looks

and his success on the critically acclaimed,
award-winning TV show Mad Men may lead
you to conclude the guy has led a charmed
life. Hamm was 36 when he finally landed
the breakthrough gig as ad man Don Draper.
Now tasting sweet success, Hamm has the
TV series, and also stars as FBI agent Adam
Frawley in The Town (Ben Affleck’s latest
directorial effort). He took GQ’s “International
Man Award” in September and has three high-
profile films due out next year. No wonder he’s
in great spirits, as he gamely chats with us at
the Toronto Film Festival.

Get behind an All Terrain Vehicle and embark on
a wild off-road adventure through lava beds and
river crossings. You’ll also see boulders left over
from past volcanic eruptions.

Four wheels and a lava wall

Perhaps the quickest way to get an intimate knowledge
of this land is to traverse it on wheels. No, we don’t mean
a boring road trip in any old car. We’re talking about an
off-road romp in an All Terrain Vehicle (ATV). Like its name
suggests, this crate goes where other cars cannot, its 4x4
wheels treading with impunity over rocks, mud and sand
(and just about anything else). Licenses aren’t required for
this easy-to-drive vehicle; you ride it like a motorbike: saddle
seat, handlebars and all. Then zoom off into the countryside
at 40-plus kph. The Legazpi City branch of G1 ATV (tel: +63
(905) 455 7594, www.g1atv.com) runs daily tours, the usual
routes passing through pyroclastic highways formed by past
eruptions of Mayon.
With a carriage like this, one easily turns into a gas-
powered adrenaline junkie. Ignore the brakes — they’re just
an accessory. A flip of the switch feeds the 150cc motor,
taking you over a boulder-strewn landscape of black volcanic
turf. You cross gullies and streams and pass smiling locals
and cud-chewing cows. This is one totally rocky ride; and by
the end of it you’ll be caked with dirt and splattered with mud.
But you’ll want to do it all over again.
G1 ATV jock Cyril notes that their vehicles aren’t just suited
for joyrides. During last year’s eruption alert, TV camera
crews kept asking to rent their ATV’s so they could enter
the “danger zone” — an evacuated area spanning 8km
around the smoldering crater. Thankfully today there are
few restrictions, and one can even drive up to a fearsome
reminder of Mayon Volcano’s power: an impossibly high rock
wall, the remains of a lava flow from a 2006 eruption.

Exciting as an ATV ride may sound,
there are outdoor enthusiasts who
prefer the more traditional mode of foot
transport. Thankfully, one doesn’t need
to take the grueling, 10-hour trek up
the Mayon mountainside to enjoy the
slower pace. Away from the volcano’s

of these is a walk through Vera Falls,
about an hour’s drive north of Legazpi.
A 1km-long downward trek from a

THREE YEARS AGO, Koji Satono, 36,
and his wife Mari, 37, decided that they
no longer wanted to be a part of the
relentless bustle of living in the city. The
couple made a bold move. They left
Osaka and moved to the countryside
where life promised to be simpler.
They moved to a small village, a train
ride and then a bus ride away, totalling
a two-hour journey. In their landscape,
Osaka’s gray concrete environs have
given way to lushly mesmerizing green
vistas. In the slower-paced milieu of the
small farming town, it is easy to see
why a city-fied couple chose to make as
drastic a change as Koji and Mari did.
Ayabe is a sleepy town nestled in the
mountains of Kyoto prefecture. But Koji
and Mari’s home is deeper still, further
into the rural countryside. There are no
businessmen in suits and no flicker of
neon lights here. There are just the hours
between dawn and dusk, and people
tilling the land.
In the car, on the way to the village,
Mari talks about her past life, and her
16-month-old son Yuuki listens as
though he understands perfectly.
“My husband was a postal worker in
Osaka, while I worked at the help desk
of a company,” she shares. “The life in

“Here” is a tiny village called Ichishi.

There are only 20 houses, and several

of these stand empty. The roads near
their home are even narrower as steep-
sided mountains start to close in, so you
can’t get a signal for your mobile phone.
“Here we are, home,” Mari says,
pulling up the car in front of their house.
“You know, my son was the first baby in
40 years to be born in this village?”
The house, made mainly of wood,
is the couple’s own design, and it is so
much more spacious than the average
Japanese city dwelling. Several
standing fans blow fresh country air
through the rooms, and there isn’t a
single air-conditioner in sight.
Koji is waiting in the driveway. The
family welcomes guests with cups of

Word got around about Salud’s

them anymore.” Until the two set up

Quirky
Cuisine
Imagine a dining experience that
involves being “kidnapped”, served
by hobbits or eating on a toilet seat.
Welcome to Asia’s wildest restaurants.
Text by Richard Baimbridge

THIS REGION HAS always been

known for its exotic cuisine, but lately
a few innovative restaurateurs have
taken things to a whole new level. In
response to the very modern dilemma,
“What shall we have for dinner?”
people are getting increasingly
creative (or perhaps desperate), and
sometimes, downright bizarre. Maybe
you’ve heard of some of the more
common ones: dining in the dark and
being served by waiters in night vision
goggles; sushi served on a naked body;
restaurants where guests are attended
to by coddling Japanese nannies or
vampires, your choice.
So if you’re sitting at home tonight,
or perusing the guidebook listings in
your hotel room, thinking that Italian/
French/Mexican/Chinese/Fusion/
Japanese just sounds too humdrum,
and your palate is yearning for true
excitement, read on. Here, we bring
you some of the strangest dining
experiences in the culinary world.
Elitists might “poo poo” the idea of
having dinner on a porcelain commode,
and few if any of these restaurants
will ever find their way into the
prestigious Michelin Guide. But if your
gastronomical vocabulary favors the
word “unusual,” then you’re in for a
real eye-opening treat.

just for you. Filled with dark Gothic

authentic, imported from European
churches, and the food is surprisingly,
dare we say, tempting.
The meñu boasts dishes that claim
to be made not just by mortal hands,
but by God Himself. That’s bound to be
worth at least one Michelin Star. For
cocktails, sample the Joan d’Arc made
with vodka, ginger ale, and raspberry.
