Determination of Afflux :
As per Cl. 106.6 of IRC:5 - 2015, the following is the methodology for calculating the afflux.
1 If the waterway is restricted as per Cluause 106.5.2, it will cause afflux at the bridge and design HFL
will accordingly be raised
2 The afflux shall be calculated by using any suitable method based on conversation of energy or
momentum. In absence of any rigorous method, the afflux may be calculated by using Molesworth
formula given below:
2 2
h = (V /17.88 + 0.015) X ((A/a) - 1), Where:
h = afflux (in meters)
V = average velocity of the water in the river prior to construction (in m/sec)
A = unobstructed sectional area of the river at proposed site (in sq.m)
a = Constricted area of the river at proposed site (in sq.m)
3 The effect of afflux on the velocity, submergence area and scour etc shall be worked out and
accounted for in the design
( as per the hydraulic calculations obtained from the Irrigation
V = 0.905 m/sec
Department )
Dia of Pier column, which obstruct the flow = 2.25 m
Width of Abutment portion, which obstruct the flow = 0.9 m
Span Arrangement Provided = 3 x 33.50m
Total Length of Bridge, from FoD to FoD = 100.5 m
No. of Piers = 2
No. of Abutments = 2
Total width of obstruction to flow = ( 2 x 2.25) + ( 2 x 0.9 )
= 6.3 m
Effective Linear Water Way = 94.2 m
2
2
h = V A
+ 0.015 x - 1
17.88 a
h = 0.82 276.38
+ 0.015 x - 1
17.88 259.05
Afflux h = 0.008 m
However as per Cl. 8.2 of IS:6966 (Part I) - 1989 , min. afflux of 0.3m is considered for
working of Min. FRL to be provided for the Proposed Bridge
Minimum FRL required as per the afflux calculated above:
( as per the Hydraulic Calculations
HFL = RL (+) 2.62 provided by the Dept. and the sasme
is tabulated above)
Depth of Superstructure = 2.25 m
Thickness of wearing coat = 0.075 m
Afflux = 0.300 m
Cabmer Correction = 0.20 m
Vertical Clearence required = 0.90 m ( as per Cl. 106.8.2 of IRC:5 - 2015)
FRL required = RL (+) 6.345
FRL Provided = RL (+) 8.85
Note: As the FRL provided is much more than the required FRL including afflux, the
provided span arrangement and other General Arrangement Details are sufficient and are
in order.
