This 40-minute lesson plan aims to develop 5th grade students' understanding of area and perimeter. Students will start with a warm-up reviewing their prior knowledge of area and perimeter calculations. They will then draw various shapes based on given area and perimeter descriptions in their textbooks. Next, students will calculate the area and perimeter of "Minecraft monsters" on worksheets or shapes they create themselves. The lesson will conclude with students presenting their work and the teacher observing their understanding of using area and perimeter.

Next, using their textbooks (grid paper) Ask students to draw
a shape based upon a description of its area and/or perimeter. Draw a square with an area of 9cm2 Draw a rectangle with a perimeter of 15cm Draw a rectangle that has a perimeter of 14cm and an area of 10cm2
Next, students will calculate the area and perimeter using
the Minecraft worksheets. For students that will find this task too basic, give them a blank piece of grid paper and make them create their own grid monster with their own area and perimeter in which they can allow their friends to work out.
10 min Conclusion (Presentation/Reflection)
Whole class reflection. Students will present their finalised
work as a class. Teacher will observe each work to see how everyone went with finding/creating their “Minecraft monsters” using area and perimeter.
