Unit Plan Theme: Farm Animals Science Lesson Plan; Milk A Cow

Lesson Objective: Students will be able to apply knowledge from the book to the milk lesson.

Lesson Materials:
 “The Milk Makers” book by Gail Gibbons
 Cow toy
 Rubber glove
 Milk
 Bucket
Lesson Procedures:
1. After learning about farm animals for a few days now, for this lesson we will be focusing
on cows.
2. I will have the students sit on the carpet, and I will ask them recall questions such as
“what sound does a cow make? What do they eat? What color are they?” Then I will go
into talking about how cows produce milk. The milk we drink comes from cows.
3. I will read them the story “The Milk Makers” by Gail Gibbons.
4. After the book, I will discuss what we just read. The story goes from the cow eating, to
how milk is on your table for dinner. It talks about how different animals can make milk,
but we mostly drink or use cows milk. It also talks about how the milk is made inside the
cow’s body, and how farmers milk the udders to collect the milk.
5. I will have a cow toy to show them where the udders are, which leads into the little
experiment.
6. Before we start, I will demonstrate the motion that farmers make to milk a cow; how they
pull their hands up and down and squeeze the udders. I will then have the children do it
with me to practice how they would milk a cow. Then, I will have a rubber glove, and the
ends of the fingers will have tiny holes in it. The glove will represent the cow’s udders. I
will have one student come up at a time, and I will pour a little bit of milk into the glove
and have the student squeeze the “udders” to get the milk into the bucket. This is how
farmers milk a cow!
7. After everyone has a turn we can briefly go over again how a cow produces milk, and
how the farmer must milk a cow to collect the milk, like how we just reenacted. Then I
can ask recall questions from the book and the conversations like “what does a cow eat?
How does a cow make milk? What is the part of the cow that the farmer has to milk?”

Lesson assessment:
Teacher will be able to assess the acquired knowledge by observing and recording the students
answers and comments relating to the cow lesson and recall questions.

5.3.1 Investigate and compare the basic physical characteristics of plants, humans, and other
animals. 5.3.P.A.1
