Lab Exercises 1
Connecting Two Computers Using Crossover Cables

The purpose of this lab is to show the student how to connect two computers together using a
crossover cable. In order to do this the student will learn how to share files using Windows 7 and
connect computers using NICs and a crossover cable. After completing this lab the student will
have a basic understanding of how to connect computers together into a peer-to-peer network.

MATERIALS
• Two computers running Windows 7 ultimate
• Cross over cable or straight through cable
• Paper
• Pen or pencil
DO THE LAB
Write down three things you need to be able to do/have based on the above.
Connect the Computers Together
1. Make sure both computers are turned off.
2. Connect one end of the crossover cable to the network card in computer 1; it does not
matter which end.
3. Connect the other end of the crossover cable to the network card in computer 2.
Configure the Two Computers
1. Turn both computers on. It does not matter which one you turn on first.
2. Sign in to Windows on both computers, as you normally do.
3. Wait until both computers have fully loaded Windows and all startup programs are
shown in the System Tray.
4. With the left mouse button, click Start in the bottom left corner of the screen.
5. With the right mouse button, click Computer, which should be located on the right
pane of the Start Menu.
6. With the left mouse button, click Properties at the bottom of the pop-up menu.
7. Observe the Workgroup name listed on computer 1 and write it down exactly as shown
on the screen.
8. On computer 2, with the left mouse button, click on the Change... button.
9. Type the Workgroup name listed on computer 1 in the Workgroup textbox in computer
2 exactly as it was shown in computer 1.
10. With the left mouse button, click OK.
11. A message box appears that says something like Welcome to the “Workgroup Name You
Typed” workgroup.
12. With the left mouse button, click OK.
13. Another message box will appear saying, You must restart this computer for the
changes to take effect.
With the left mouse button, click OK when you see this message.
14. The System Properties dialog box reappears with the Computer Name tab selected.
With the left mouse button, click OK when this dialog box appears.
15. A message box will appear saying something like You must restart your computer before the
new settings will take effect. Do you want to restart your computer now?
With the left mouse button, click Yes when this message box appears.
16. Computer 2 restarts and both computers are now in the same workgroup.
17. Before proceeding to the next step, follow steps 7–11 to verify that both computers are
showing the EXACT same workgroup name.
18. With the left mouse button, click OK on both computers, to close their System Properties
dialog boxes.

Enable Sharing
1. With the left mouse button, click Start.
2. With the left mouse button, click Computer.
3. With the right mouse button, click on the Windows (C:) or Local Disk(C:) hard disk
drive or whichever other hard disk drive you may want to be able to exchange files with.
4. With the left mouse button, click Sharing tab…
5. With the left mouse button, click on the Advance Sharing and Check the Share this
folder…
6. With the left mouse button, click Permissions and click Full Control.

9. In the lower portion click the link Network and Sharing Center….
10. Scroll down and click Turn off password protected sharing and click Save Changes.
11. Click close button.
Verify the Share in Network Places
1. With the left mouse button, click Start.
2. With the left mouse button, click Computer…
3. With the Left mouse button, click Network..
4. You will see your computers. It is best practice to have all computers in the same
workgroup, so they will show up on the other computers.
5. If you do not see your computers, then you may have a “firewall” of sorts running on
your computer. You will need to either configure your firewall to allow file sharing
between computers or temporarily shut the firewall down.
6. You can now exchange data between the two computers.

Table 1. Performance Rubrics for Laboratory Exercise 1

Ratings
Criteria Excellent Good Fair Poor
4 3 2 1
Safety Procedures
- Applied / manifested safety precautions
while working
Adherence to the procedures
- Followed the procedures systematically
Workmanship
- Organized materials and tools while
accomplishing the task and has time
management
Quality of Product
- Produced a fully functional peer to peer
connection and can exchange data
between the two computer.
TOTAL*

* Means that in every point a student will get will be multiplied by 3.

2 points will be added the total score to make it fifty.
Sample computation:
(4(3) + 4 (3) + 4 (3) + 4 (3) + 5 = 50
(12 + 12 + 12 +12) + 2 = 50
48 + 2 = 50
50 = 50
