Chapter 6 Reflection
Chapter 6 Reflection
The main goal of a business is to earn profits. However, this does not mean that
a business is not morally obliged to continuously provide products and services that
benefit society and this can’t be done if the business is not profitable.
We are responsible for our actions and their consequences on others. Which is
why businesses has to be aware of both responsibility (who performs the action) and
accountability (Consequence of the action). This is easily determined in sole proprietor
and partnerships because the responsibility and accountability are tied to the proprietor
in sole proprietorship and in the partners in partnership. It is difficult to determine in
corporation because corporations are juridical person in which natural people perform
the acts of the corporation.
Corporations have to be aware of the implications and consequences of their
activities since they have to be accountable with their actions. They must continuously
provide products and services that benefit society. However, this must not be construed
as a justification for the unethical actions and decisions. In which case we need to look
at the company’s mission and vision statement to make sure that they conform to the
boundaries of their mission and vision.
Some companies employ Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) or the actions of
the organization on environmental, ethical, social, and economic issues. CSR is action-
oriented and it deals with issues that are external to the organizations, yet part of it
because of its social dimension. Thus, it is expected of the organizations to embody
CSR in its corporate identity.
It is foolish to do things without thinking it through especially if we don’t have
enough knowledge on the decision making. Which is why we need to employ strategies
in CSR so that we can actualize CSR in terms of tangible and measurable terms. It also
gives the company a guide in what actions they would take in order to do CSR.
There are already companies who are initiating CSR here in the Philippines. We
have Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) which is dedicated to the
promotion of commitment to social development, San Miguel Corporation which
acknowledges the value of “doing business with a heart,” Petron Corporation which
‘makes a significant contribution towards the well-being of the Philippine society,’ and
many more. These companies have many CSR programs however they do have one
goal in doing these activities. It is for the betterment of the society.
