RESEARCH METHODS SKILLS

Cambridge Qualitative Research Methods (MP02)

Coursework System Dynamics for Policy and Management (TPE8)
Research Annual Research Methodology Workshop – 2013 & 2014
Methodology Event organised by Cambridge University for Doctoral Researchers from UK
Workshops and Europe, tailored to students from management and engineering.

Field Conducted case studies and analysed sets of cases.

Experience Handled diverse types of qualitative data – interviews, video/audio analysis,
documentation analysis, passive/ participant observations, and facilitated
workshops.

PREVIOUS INDUSTRY RESEARCH PROJECTS

 Cleaning products: Ecover / Forum for the Future, ‘Glocal’ project (Jul2014-Apr2015)
o Setting up localised production-consumption systems for cleaning products by using local
ingredients, with Mallorca as pilot site.
o I analysed distributed manufacturing cases across industries to identify the details of the
arrangement and the appropriate contexts for the arrangement to work.
o The team is exploring my proposed IP strategy for separate openly-shared platform
knowledge and protected knowledge across distributed sites. My cross-industry findings
helped the Communication team envision the arrangement better and disseminate the
‘Glocal’ project’s applicability.

 Chemical processing: Croda (Oct2015-Apr2016)

o Expanding Croda’s production capacity at its flagship Rawcliffe Bridge plant by
transitioning from batch processing to continuous processing. NiTech, a startup, offers a
potential continuous processing solution.
o In a team of 2, I developed two Business Models – flexible manufacturing and
servitisation – that accommodate the interests of both firms, while unlocking
sustainability benefits.
o The two firms are pursuing both proposed Business Models, as a basis for future
collaboration. This is currently in an advanced stage of development and negotiation.

 Furniture factory: Vitsoe, a manufacturer of modular furniture (Jun2013–Aug2014)

o Identifying an architect-partner for Vitsoe to co-design a new factory in Warwickshire,
consistent with Vitsoe’s design principles.
o I translated Vitsoe’s principles from furniture design to manufacturing attributes for a
factory.
o My findings helped Vitsoe’s MD select an architect-partner and a factory-design.

 Automobiles: Riversimple, a hydrogen fuel-cell electric-car UK start-up (Jan2014-

Jun2015)
o Setting up a business ecosystem by applying Riversimple’s organising principles
consistently across its industry practice decisions.
o I identified their business to be a combination of distributed manufacturing and
servitisation patterns. I offered corresponding case-examples to highlight the success
factors from other industries.
o The Founder, Hugo Spowers, used my research on patterns to conceptually bridge
Riversimple’s principles to practice.

 Sustainability Consulting: Forum for the Future, a London-based Consultancy (Mar 2015-
Jul2015)
o Improving the stakeholder-convened system-design workshop facilitation process of the
Consultancy.
o In a team of two, I interviewed 17 employees across the organisation’s hierarchy who had
worked on 25 projects across industries.
o I identified the need for more content support rather than process support for workshop
facilitation. The workshop facilitators needed more real-world case-examples from
beyond the consultancy to give confidence to their clients about sustainable
manufacturing. This primary limitation has been brought to the attention of the
Consultancy for revising their process.

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PROJECTS

 Cataloguing Circular Economy cases: EPSRC Centre, Cambridge University (May2016–

Aug2016)
o Clarifying the overlaps between Circular Economy and Servitisation, to help the EPSRC
Centre prepare future grant applications.
o I delivered a catalogue of four generic Circular Economy archetypes with case-examples –
Closed Loop with Servitisation, Closed Loop without Servitisation, Remanufacturing and
Repurposing.
o This catalogue is now a basis for future grant proposals by the centre. It also resulted in
an award-winning publication for me - judged best among 67 papers at a recent
international green supply chain conference.
 International Manufacturing Collaborations: UK-India (2012-2016)
o Matchmaking academics from UK and India to prepare for funding opportunities on
sustainable industrialisation.
o In a team of 2, I facilitated workshops in Cambridge, Delhi and London, building on my
networks across my almae matres.
o The UK-India Manufacturing Round Table Report I jointly prepared (published by UK Govt.
FCO) is now a primer for upcoming grant proposals of over £10M.

 Product design tools: Centre for Sustainable Technologies, Indian Institute of Science
(2009-2012)
o Identifying sustainability concerns in the use of computer-aided design tools for product
design, to guide the Centre’s ongoing research.
o I worked with product designers and sustainability experts, to conduct independent
research.
o The findings resulted in a high-impact journal publication for me, and the highly-
referenced publication is guiding the development of design tools and education.
