This document provides instructions for creating a sketch of a tire in a 3D modeling program. It involves creating an empty component, attaching a concept sketch as a canvas, and then sketching the tire profile using lines, dimensions, rectangles, splines, and constraints to fully define the shape. The sketch is then mirrored to complete the tire profile.

Lesson: Creating the Tire Sketch
After completing this lesson, you will
have learned how to create a fully defined sketch using dimensions and constraints.
Learning Objectives:
• Create an empty component.
• Create a sketch. • Add a dimension. • Add a constraint. The completed exercise • Use Attached Canvas.
1. Open the Data Panel and make sure you are in
the master folder for ME – Intro to CAD project. Click Save and name the file “ME Concept Bicycle” then click Save. Minimize the Data Panel.
2. Click INSERT then choose Attached Canvas.
3. When prompted to select a plane, choose the
Right plane.

4. In the ATTACHED CANVAS dialog box, click Select Image. Navigate to the ME Bicycle Concept Sketch in the Lesson 3 Dataset and click Open. Change the Canvas opacity to 100%.
5. Navigate to a right view and zoom into the crank
area. Position the drawing so that the center of the crank area is approximately on the origin of the project. Click OK. Zoom out to see the entire image. Note that a Canvases folder has been added to the Browser and that the Attached Canvas can be shown or hidden at any time.
6. The scale and units of the project are not
correct. In the Browser, expand the Document Settings and make sure that Units is set to millimeters. If it is not, left click the icon and change the Unit Type to millimeters. In the Canvases folder, right click on the ME Bicycle Concept Sketch and choose Calibrate.
7. Select the upper and lower points on the tire
and dictate a dimension of 668mm. Use the Navigation Bar to select Fit (or push F6) in order to fit the sketch onto the screen. Note that the origin is no longer at the center of the crank. Right click on the concept sketch in the Canvases folder, select Edit, and reposition the sketch so that the origin is at the center of the crank. Use the Browser to make the Origin visible. When finished, click OK in the EDIT CANVAS dialog box and hide the origin.

8. Save the file and then Add Version Description of “Attached Canvas”. This will add notes to the Data Panel which will be useful as you progress throughout the course. By using this workflow, you can efficiently find important milestones throughout the development of your project.
9. Click ASSEMBLE> New Component. Name the
new component “Wheel”. Click OK. This will create a component in the Browser. Components are different from bodies in a few ways. Activating a component will display only the relevant features in the Timeline. Also, components allow for motion in an assembly.
10. Select Wheel:1 in the Browser. Click
ASSEMBLE> New Component. Note that Wheel:1 is the parent. Change the Name to Tire. Make sure that it is Activated then click OK.
11. Note that the Tire Component is now under the
Wheel Component in the Browser. Expand Tire, expand the Origin, and note that the origin has its own coordinate system. Click SKETCH then select the XZ plane to begin sketching the tire.
12. In the Sketch section of the Toolbar, click the
Line button. Using the Origin as a reference, draw a line towards the rear wheel of the concept sketch. Give the line a dimension of 622/2 because 622mm is the diameter of the inside of the tire and you need the radius.
Lesson: Creating the Tire Sketch Page | 3
13. Draw a second line extending from the first line but don’t place a dimension. Click the green check mark then press Esc to leave the Line tool. These two lines are Coincident with the Origin but can rotate about the origin freely.
14. Left click the 311mm line then choose
Horizontal/Vertical from the SKETCH PALETTE dialog box. This will ensure that the lines do not have the freedom to rotate around the origin.
15. Click SKETCH> Sketch Dimension and add a
dimension of 668/2 between the Origin and the furthest point on the second line. You now have two lines, one for the outside radius of the wheel and a second for the outside radius of the tire.
16. Click the 311mm line and choose Construction
from the SKETCH PALETTE. Do the same for the 334mm line. These lines are now dashed lines which means they are construction geometry and can be referenced for measurement but will not factor in to extrusions, revolves, or other solid geometry creation.

17. Click SKETCH> 2 Point Rectangle. Draw a rectangle then press Esc to end the Rectangle tool.
18. Click the Midpoint constraint in the SKETCH
PALETTE. Select the top line of the rectangle then the far end point on the 311mm line. Then select the bottom line of the rectangle and the far end point on the 334mm line. Press Esc to leave the Midpoint constraint tool.
19. Press D on the keyboard and add a dimension
of 22mm to the bottom line of the rectangle.
20. From the SKETCH dropdown, select Point.
Place a Point on the top line of the rectangle and press ESC. Press D on the keyboard and add a dimension of 7mm from the centerline to the point.
21. To begin drawing the tire, click SKETCH>
Spline. Start at the point you just added to the top of the rectangle, add a point to the side of the rectangle, then add a third point to the middle of the rectangle’s bottom edge. Click the green check mark to end the spline. Press Esc.

22. Grab the green handle point and snap it to the side of the rectangle to add a vertical constraint. Similarly, snap the green handles of the bottom point to the bottom line of the rectangle to add a horizontal constraint. Adjust the middle point location and handles until you are happy with the shape of the tire.
23. Click SKETCH> Mirror, select the spline as the
object. Click on the Mirror Line option then select the construction geometry as the Mirror Line. Click OK.
