Number Relation

The document contains 10 math word problems involving number relations and their step-by-step solutions. The problems include finding consecutive numbers, integers or even/odd numbers that satisfy given conditions about their sum, difference or product. For each problem, the solution defines variables to represent the unknown numbers, sets up an equation relating the numbers based on the conditions, then solves for the unknowns.

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 1: Find two consecutive odd numbers such that thrice the smaller number exceeds the larger by twelve.
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st odd number

X + 2 = 2nd odd number

 3x – 12 = x + 12
2x = 14
2 2
X=7 1st odd number

 X+2
7+2=9 2nd odd number

 3x -12 = x + 2
3 (7) – 12 = 7+2
9=9
Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 2: Find two consecutive even positive integers whose product is 288.
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st positive even integer

X + 2 = 2nd positive even integer

 x (x + 2) = 288
X2 + 2x = 288
X2+ 2x – 288 = 0
(x-16) (x+18) = 0
X = 16 1st positive even integer
X= -18

 x+2
16 + 2 = 18 2nd positive even integer

 16 x 18 = 288
Reference: Discussed in the class
NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM
PROBLEM 3: Find two consecutive positive integers whose product is 462.
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st positive integer

X + 1 = 2nd positive integer

 x (x + 1) = 462
X2 + x = 462
X2+ x – 462 = 0
(x-21) (x+22) = 0
X = 21 1st positive integer
X= -22

 x+1
21 + 1 = 22 2nd positive integer

 x2 + x – 462 = 0
212 + 21 – 462 = 0
462 – 462 = 0
0=0
Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 4: If twice a number is decreased by 13, the result is 9. What is the number?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = the number

 2x – 13 = 9
2x = 9 + 13
2x = 22
2 2
X = 11 the number

Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM
PROBLEM 5: Seven less than twice a number is 15. What is the number?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = the number

 2x – 7 = 15
2x = 15 + 7
2x = 22
2 2
X = 11 the number

Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 6: The sum of two numbers is 39. Their difference is 7. What are the numbers?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = first number

y = second number

 x + y = 39
x–y= 7
2x = 46
2 2
X = 23 first unknown number

Substitute.

 x + y = 39
23 + y = 39
y = 39 – 23
y = 16 second unknown number

Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM
PROBLEM 7: The sum of two numbers is 24. The greater number is 10 more than the smaller. What are the numbers?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = smaller number

y = larger number

 x + y = 24
y = x + 10

Transpose.

 x + y = 24
-x + y = 10
2y = 34
2 2
y = 17 larger number

Substitute.

 x + y = 24
x + 17 = 24
x = 24 – 17
x=7 smaller number

Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 8: The sum of two consecutive integers is 73. What are the numbers?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st positive integer

X + 1 = 2nd positive integer

 x + x + 1 = 73
2x = 73 -1
2x = 72
2 2
X = 36 first positive integer

 x+1
36 + 1 = 37 second positive integer

 x + x + 1= 73
36+ 36+ 1 = 73
73 = 73
Reference: Discussed in the class
NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM
PROBLEM 9: The sum of two consecutive even integers is 62. What are the numbers?
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st even integer

X + 2 = 2nd even integer

 x + x + 2 = 62
2x = 62 - 2
2x = 60
2 2
X = 30 first even integer

 x+2
30 + 2 = 32 second even integer

 x + x + 2 = 62
30 + 30 + 2 = 62
62 = 62
Reference: Discussed in the class

NUMBER RELATION PROBLEM

PROBLEM 10: Find two consecutive odd integers whose sum is 40.
SOLUTION:

 Let x = 1st odd integer

X + 2 = 2nd odd integer

 x + x + 2 = 40
2x = 40 - 2
2x = 38
2 2
X = 19 first even integer

 x+2
19 + 2 = 21 second even integer

 x + x + 2 = 40
