Music Theory 1 (ABRSM Grade 1-2)

1. Week 1
 Basic note value, including rest (Semibreve, minim, crochet, quaver, semiquaver)
 Barlines, time signature (2/4, ¾ and 4/4)
 Clef (treble and bass)
 Ties (note has to be held across a bar line)
 Dot (single)
 Accidental
 Tone and semitone

2. Week 2
 Cancelling accidental (natural sign)
 Major scales: C, G, D, F, Bb (T-T-S-T-T-T-S formula)
 Key signature
 Intervals
i. Harmonic (played together)
ii. Melodic (played separately)
iii. Unison – octave

3. Week 3
 Tonic triad (1st major)
 Creating new rhythm from existing rhythm (no melody)
 Performance direction (symbols)
i. Tie
ii. Slur (legato)
iii. Accent >
iv. Staccato
v. Pause
vi. Crescendo and decrescendo

4. Week 4
 Ledger lines (lower or higher notes, start with middle C)

 Key signature with/without accidental
 Triplet (quaver, crochet, mixed note value)
 Minor scales: Am, Em and Dm
6. Week 6
 Types of minor scales
i. Natural minor (T-S-T-T-S-T-T)
ii. Harmonic minor (T-S-T-T-S-3S-S)
iii. Melodic minor; ascending (T-S-T-T-T-T-S), descending (T-T-S-T-T-S-T)

7. Week 7
 *Mid term

8. Week 8
 Grouping notes and rest
 Composing a rhythm
i. 4 bars
ii. Musical sense

 Duple (2), triple (3), quadruple (4) time signature

 Completing bar, including rest.
 4 bar rhythm, with compound time
