Traffic Safety
(What You Need to Know About Auto Accidents)

Brake correctly to avoid an accident. Do not slam on the brake if your

vehicle is not equipped with an Antilock Braking System(ABS); doing so could cause the wheels to
lock up, and may send the car into a skid. Instead, pump the brake by applying pedal pressure,
releasing, then applying pedal pressure, releasing, then applying pressure again. Doing so will help
you maintain steering control. Maintaining control of your vehicle when braking is essential to your
safety.
I f your vehicle is equipped with ABS brakes, apply firm, but constant braking pressure to
brake safely.

In case of an accident
Here’s what to do if you are involved in an accident.

 Assist the injured. Administer first aid, if you are trained to do so. Get help
for the injured as quickly as possible.

 Report the accident by calling Emergency Services (dial 110), immediately. If this is not
possible, ask a bystander to contact Emergency Services and report the
accident. Use a telephone or mobile phone to call, or have a passing
motorist call and report the traffic accident on your behalf.

 Always provide your name and full description of the accident and/
or emergency.

 Protect the accident scene from

further chaos. Warn other motorist by setting our
emergency triangle, setting out flares, turning on the
emergency flashers, or all three.

 Do not move your vehicle until the traffic police have

cleared you to do so.

 When the police arrive, provide all the documentation and

information they request. Always cooperate with the
investigating officer.
Modify your Behavior
To avoid becoming an accident statistics, consider modifying your actions when behind the wheel
by:

 Obeying all traffic signs and signals;

 Not speeding;

 Staying alert;

 Refraining from eating and drinking while driving;

 Not talking or using your mobile phone;

 Giving other drivers plenty of room;

 Not tailgating;

 Signaling every time you merge,

change lanes, or turn;

 Not making obscene gestures;

Keeping your eyes and attention focused on the road;

Avoiding eye contact with aggressive drivers; and

Being polite and courteous, even if the other driver isn’t.

Driving is not a race or a

contest to see who wins. Remaining
calm, recognizing poor driving habits in your self and others, and
modifying your driving behavior could save your life and your
family.
