Which Is The Preferred/better Dimensioning Method ?

I. Tolerance stack up analysis is a method to determine the cumulative effect of part variations on an assembly requirement. It accounts for size, form, orientation, and location variations of parts in an assembly. II. There are three golden rules to tolerance stack up analysis: 1) the analysis loop must be closed, 2) surfaces must contact or axes must align when moving between components, and 3) the loop can only move in one direction. The procedure involves identifying the assembly requirement, creating a loop diagram, assigning tolerance values, converting to bilateral tolerances, and adding values to determine if the requirement is met. III. Tolerance stack up analysis motivates reducing prototypes, provides a thorough understanding of product

Which is the preferred/better dimensioning method ?

What we have done now is the…

Tolerance Stack up exercise

Tool to find the minimum / maximum gap or interference
in a part or assembly - Gap Analysis

Used to determine the cumulative effect of Part variations

with respect to an assembly requirement

Variations occur in 4 characteristics of a Part in an assembly

• Size
• Form
• Orientation
• Location
3 Golden Rules of Tolerance Stack up

1. Loop Should be Closed one

2. To move from one component to other their surfaces must

be in contact or the axis must be aligned

3. Loop Should be in One direction only

Procedure
1. Identify the Aim of the stack up with required gap &
assembly fit

2. Create a loop diagram as per the rules above

3. Assign the direction value (+/-) to the nominal values

4. Convert all the tolerances to symmetric bilateral tolerance

5. Add up the nominal values and tolerance values (WC) to

achieve the aim
Lets discuss the same in Stack-up Calculator !!!

Yes, we have a calculator now…!

GD&T is better than rectangular tolerances

10 +/- 0.5
10 +/- 0.5 1

5 +/- 1 -1 +1 5

5 +/- 1

More Tolerance than the rectangular tolerance

It also controls the Form , Position and Orientation
Obvious Slides…
Motivation

Reduce no. of Prototypes

Thorough understanding of Product Capabilities
Efficient transition to Production
Expected performance of the Product in the field
Greater Profitability
Translation
Will the Parts fit together ?

Will the assembly fit as expected ?

Will the manufacturing will be able to produce the part

with minimal errors ?
Is the Quality monitoring/inspecting the right things ?

Will the part have lesser rejections ?
