Solve Quadratic Equation by Extracting Square Root. Solve Problems Involving Quadratic Equations That Can Be Solved by Extracting Square Roots

This document outlines a lesson plan for teaching students how to solve quadratic equations by extracting square roots. The lesson plan includes objectives, content, procedures such as examples and practice problems, and an assignment. Students will learn to solve quadratic equations of the form x^2 = k by extracting the square root of both sides of the equation.

The following quadratic equations can be solved by extracting square roots.
Example 1: x2 - 144 = 0

Solution: x2 = 144

x 2  144
x = +12

Example 2: 4x2 - 64 = 0

Solution: 4x2 = 64

x2 = 16

x 2  16
x = +4

Example 3: 6x2 - 54 = 0

Solution: 6x2 = 54

x2 = 9

x2  9
x = +3

Example 4: x2 = 17

Solution: x 2  17

x=+ 17

D. Evaluation

2. t2 = 81
3. 3h2 - 147 = 0
4. (x - 4)2 = 169
5. (k + 7)2 = 289
E. Generalization
Solving Quadratic Equations by Extracting Square Roots

Quadratic equations that can be written in the form x2 = k can be solved by applying the
following properties:

1. If k > 0, then x2 = k has two real solutions or roots: x = + k .

2. If k = 0, then x2 = k has one real solution or root: x = 0.
3. If k < 0, then x2 = k has no real solutions or roots.
The method of solving the quadratic equation x2 = k is called extracting square roots.

F. Assignment

Solve each quadratic equation by extracting square roots. (1pt each)

1. x2 - 8 = 0
2. x2 = 48
3. (s - 9)2 - 64 = 0
4. 3t2 = 75
5. 4x2 - 144 = 0
6. 5a2 – 72 = 3a2
