Tourism Characteristic and Planning Implications

Tourism is a composite product made up of contributions from multiple service providers like transportation, accommodations, food, and activities. It is also an intangible product as tourists do not own the facilities they use but have access to them for a specified time. Developing tourism requires long-term planning and significant capital investments due to the long gestation periods and financial requirements to establish tourism destinations and infrastructure. Tourism planning must take into account the cultural assets, environmental impacts, and external forces that can influence the industry, and involve key stakeholders to establish collaborative and competitive strategies for a dynamic and growing industry.
