Dissecting A Pigs Heart

This document summarizes a group's dissection of a pig's heart. The group was required by their teacher to dissect a pig's heart to better understand the organ's anatomy. Through the dissection, the group was able to identify the key parts of the heart, like the septum, aorta, mitral valve, and chordae tendineae. They were able to see the real structures and functions of the heart firsthand. The dissection helped the group appreciate and understand the heart.

ABSTRACT

We can’t really appreciate the real form inside of our body

specially students so what our teachers did, she requires us to bring a

pigs heart by group.

This is our term paper for the lab that we did in our subject in

earth and life science, which was based on dissecting a pigs heart.we

worked in groups. One surprising thing we found out the real parts of

the heart, and we can see it by our eyes.A big part about this lab was

to know and see the parts of the heart so that we can really appreciate

what we are learning .By the end of this lab we our group mates were

able to know the parts of pigs heart and its function.

INTRODUCTION

How does the heart function? On the right side the upper chamber

fills with oxygen-deplete blood from your body and pushes it via the

lower chamber and the pulmonary artery back to the lungs. Here blood

picks up oxygen and release carbon dioxide. On the left side the upper

chamber fills with oxygen rich blood from the lungs. This is pumped via
the lower chamber into the aorta and out to the body to provide cells

with crucial oxygen.Like human beings the heart of the pig is four

chambered.

The top two chambers are known as atria while the bottom two

chambers are called ventricle left and right ventricles. The inner surface

of the heart is lined by a smooth tissue known as enducarium. The

hearts operates as a pumping organ.

In an adult pigs heart rates is usually 70 beats ,while in case of young

piglets it can be about 200 beats per minute. In pigs the heart rate can

be felt at the base of the ear or under the tail.

METHODOLOGY

These are the steps on how to dissect a frog:

 MATERIALS NEEDED:

 Lab Gown

 Disposable Mask

 Disposable Gloves

 Dissection Tray

 Dissecting Pins

 Pigs heart
 Transparent Jar

 Dissecting Scissors

 Forceps

 Scalpel

 PROCEDURES:

 Prepare the dissection tray, dissection pan, dissection set, and

get your pigs heart.

 Clean the pigs heart first, use the safety mask and the

gloves

 Find the anterior view of the heart

 Cut the center of the heart

 And start figured out the parts of the heart

 Lastly, clean the equipments and the pigs heart

PARTS OF THE HEART

SEPTUM,

MITRAL VALVE,

CHORDAE TENDINAE,

AORTA,

PAPILLARY MUSCLES
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

Based on dissecting a pigs heart,we really see real parts of the pigs

heart,on how to to dissect a heart of a pig,and the parts of the heart

that we can really know the definition on it.

 Septum is the one separates the deoxygenated and oxygenated

blood. The interventricular septum separates these two chambers
containing different types of blood so that they can be individually
pumped out of the heart.
 Aorta is the main artery in the human body, originating from the
left ventricle of the heart and extending down to the abdomen,
where it splits into two smaller arteries (the common iliac arteries).
The aorta distributes oxygenated blood to all parts of the body
through the systemic circulation.
 Papillary muscles is a small muscle within the heart that anchors
the heart valves. The anchor ropes are the chordae tendineae,
thread-like bands of fibrous tissue that attach on one end to the
edges of the tricuspid and mitral valves of the heart and on the
other end to the papillary muscles.
 Chordae tendinae are a group of tough, tendinous strands in the
heart. They are commonly referred to as the “heart strings” since
they resemble small pieces of string. Functionally, the chordae
tendineae play a vital role in holding the atrioventricular valves in
place while the heart is pumping blood.
 Mitral valve is a valve that lets blood flow from one chamber of
the heart, the left atrium, to another called the left ventricle.
 Cusp in reference to heart valves, one of the triangular segments
of the valve which opens and closes with the flow of blood.
 Triscupid valve or right atrioventricular valve, is on the right
dorsal side of the mammalian heart, between the right atrium and
the right ventricle. The function of the valve is to prevent back flow
of blood from the right ventricle into the right atrium.
 Atrium is the upper chamber in which blood enters the heart. The
atria receive blood, and when the heart muscle contracts, pump
blood to the ventricles.
