Electro Osmotic Transfer
• In normal remediating mode
EKOGRID™ pulses are equally timed
to both directions between the
electrode rows
• The low voltage current makes the
charged contents of the pore water
move back and forward with short
electro-osmotic pulses
• EKOGRID™ control unit can be used
in transfer mode, where longer pulse
to one direction is applied
• Transfer mode utilizes electro-osmosis
to move soil cations and water with
everything water soluble

COMPLETED PROJECTS

12.4.2019 19
1. Joensuu, Finland – Former Fuel
Storage
EKOGRID™ technology was used to remediate ground in a former tank farm that was abandoned more than 20
years. Prevalent high pollution levels were indicative of a slow speed of natural bioremediation on site.
Pollutants consisted mainly of C10-C21 fractions (Diesel) and heavier fractions C21-C40. The total volume of soil
was about 15 000 m3 and consisted mostly of sand and silt.
Solution:
▪ 149 electrodes to 3 m depth and one control unit
Results:
• During in situ remediation 90% of the polluted soil was remediated
• Remaining contamination consisted of organic peat layer that was remediated by excavation.
2. Ängelholm, Sweden – Storm Pond
EKOGRID™ technology was used to treat a storm water pond
(approx. 80x50m) contaminated with fuel oil leaking from a nearby
industrial area
Focus was on treating bottom sediments that were not remediated
by a previously installed “pump and treat” system
Solution:
▪ 150 vertical electrodes at a depth of 1m in the sediment and
connected together with horizontal steel rods
▪ 1 EKOGRID™ control unit was used to manage the remediation
process.
Results:
▪ Remediation of the oil based hydrocarbons, i.e. diesel type
heating oil, reached the target values
▪ Most sampling locations showed concentrations of contaminants
below detectable levels.
2. Ängelholm, Sweden – Storm Pond
▪ After final sampling, the client’s independent environmental
consultant working for Toxicon AB, wrote in his report:

• “With reference to the effect (of EKOGRID™) to composition

and thickness of the bottom sediment layer. In the Ängelholm
pond the clay is now stone hard and sediment layer thinner
than before (from 50cm to 15cm), and sediment is now very
loose (has no tendency suck the foot deeper). It is easy to walk
over the pond, quite a difference to the situation in December,
when people stuck in the clay. This situation can be explained
with the fact that EKOGRID™ decomposes composed organic
material and clay layer will be compressed ie its water content
decreases?
Thomas”
3. New York, USA – Shopping Center
Commercial and residential parking lot in Queens, New York, that had
suffered from leakage from a near-by underground fuel tank
Significant amount of contaminants measured both in soil and ground
water
Site had been attempted to be remediated with chemical oxidation
without significant results (2010 – 2012)
Solution:
▪ 28 electrodes to 15 meter depth and one EKOGRID™ control unit
Results:
▪ Significant and rapid decrease in organic contaminants
▪ VOCs concentration reduced from a maximum of 1.000 mg/kg to
below 200 mg/kg
4. Santos, Brazil – Railway Logistics
In a railway logistics center under full operation, a large area (>1
hectare) was found to be polluted with PAH compounds at depths
ranging between 1 - 2m. A small area was selected for a
demonstration pilot project.
The client required the site activities to not be disturbed in any
form
Solution:
• 9 Vertical electrodes (steel rods) at 2 m depth
• 1 EKOGRID™ control unit was used to manage the system
Results:
• Results were followed with sampling and measurements in 7
locations for 4 rounds
• Fast remediation (4 months) at all sampling points
• Highly successful thanks to soil properties and local
environment al conditions
5. Alberta, Canada – Creosote Bench
Tests
Box test in Canada, few cubic meters of homogenized creosote soil with PCP in small container
Solution:
▪ 2 electrodes in opposite corners of the container. Irrigation with nitrogen additives.
▪ 1 EKOGRID™ control unit.
Results:
▪ Frequent sampling from soil for less than a year. Results were excellent. BTEX compounds decreased in one
month, PCP in nine months, PAH and aliphatic hydrocarbons in less than a year. Total decrease was about 1500
mg organic contaminants / kg/month
5. Alberta, Canada – Creosote Bench
Tests
6. Tallinn, Estonia – Apartment Building
The EKOGRID™ technology was used to remediate polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contaminants
(naftalene and fenantren) on a newly built apartment building on a location of a former local boiler-house together
with an oil reservoir in Tallinn, Estonia. Soil PAH concentrations exceeded guidelines for dwellings in Estonia and
highest measured concentration was 250 mg/kg.
Despite an initial mass transfer of some 200 tons of contaminated soil, contamination was later observed below
the building in the natural fine sand layer before its release to be inhabited. This required a non conventional way
to remediate the soil, such as the EKOGRID™ System.
Solution:
▪ 30 electrodes installed (of which 23 drilled through
the basement flooring) to the sand layer
▪ 1 EKOGRID™ control unit
Results:
▪ The EKOGRID™ treatment lasted from January 22, 2018
to May 7th, 2018 (5 months)
▪ Site was remediated to meet the local authorities
guidelines (under 20 mg/kg PAH)
▪ Drop in PAH concentrations from as high as 250 mg/kg
to <5 mg/kg
6. Tallinn, Estonia – Apartment Building

Site sampling results performed by the local

consultant (Maves) show how critical points
went below the local guidelines for PAHs of
under 20 mg/kg in just 4 months.
The most important points to highlight are
the following:

▪ (10) Decreased from 250 mg/kg to 2,1

mg/kg (taken at point 36 in April 2018)
▪ (33) Decreased from 120 mg/kg to 0,2
mg/kg
▪ (35) Decreased from 120 mg/kg to 0,1
mg/kg

Site sampling performed by Maves on February 2018 (Left) and April 2018 (Right) that
shows critical control points below local pollution guidelines after EKOGRID Treatment
7. Helsinki, Finland – Konala Land
Remediation for Redevelopment
When a former parking lot was found to be contaminated by Aliphatic Hydrocarbons (C21-C40) and Polycyclic
Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) prior to redevelopment into a self storage facility, the owner of the project had to
find a viable and economical solution against a more traditional and risky mass transfer approach.
In response to this, in November 2017, an EKOGRID™ Solution was engineered and installed onsite to remediate
the contamination at a comparable price to the lowest estimates of excavation and mass transfer. Doing this
ensured a final decontamination of the site with minimum environmental impact in just 9 months (achieving results
despite the operation of the system on winter months)
Solution:
▪ 72 electrodes installed down to the deepest level of contamination
▪ 1 EKOGRID control unit for the treatment of 2 500 m3 of soil
Results:
▪ The EKOGRID treatment lasted from November, 2017 to
August, 2018 (9 months)
▪ C21-C40 Hydrocarbon concentrations dropped from 3000 ppm to 460
ppm
▪ PAH concentrations dropped from 1 700 ppm to as low as 12 ppm
8. Ecuador, Pipeline Spill
EKOGRID™ solution was used in a combined solution with microbiological augmentation to treat a maintenance
pipeline spill in natural reserve area in Ecuador. End client had identified a diesel type oil spill in their pipeline. The
affectation was expressed as Total Petroleum Hydrocarbon (TPH) concentrations in soil and water; the obtained
values correspond to 13.000 mg/kg and 1.370 mg/l respectively.

Solution:
▪ The combined technology consisted from EKOGRID™
electrokinetic oxidation system with one control unit and grid
of some 150 electrodes installed directly inside the
affected area, plus a well-studied bio-augmentation
procedure based on a treatability study.
Results:
After four (4) months of operation of the combined system,
a complete sampling campaign (8 soil and 6 water samples)
were developed inside the affected area to evaluate the results:
▪ a diminution of 89% of hydrocarbon content in soil, with
a result of 1.367 mg/kg in 4 months, and a reduction of 99,33%
in 10 months, with final result of 82,65 mg/kg of TPH in soil.
▪ In water, a 99% of contaminant elimination was observed with
a TPH result of 15,43 mg/l.
