Hazard/Risk Controls
S L R S L R

• Only use tools which are appropriate or intended for the activity
• Visual inspection before use
WORKING WITH HAND TOOLS/MEASURING EQUIPMENT 3 3 M • Safety instructions in the instruction manual shall be observed 3 1 L
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment

• Determine ignition sources - Identify heat sources which could

trigger a fire due to their temperature, e.g., lighters, defective
POTENTIAL IGNITION SOURCES electrical devices, hot works processes
4 4 H 4 1 L
• Identify fuel sources which could contribute to the propagation
of fires, including flammable substances such as chemicals,
paints, solvents
• Barricade off work area if possible
USE / HANDLING OF HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES
• Substitution with substances not hazardous to health
(solid, liquid, gas, dust, fumes) 3 3 M 3 1 L
• Safety instructions in the safety data sheets shall be observed
• Immediately remove escaped liquids and dispose of in
accordance with statutory and local guidelines
• Prevent ingress of hazardous substances in confined spaces
by complete physical separation
• Immediately clean up oil and spills of any type – oil absorbants
shall be available
• Follow the instructions in the safety data sheet or the operating
instructions when using hydraulic fluid
• Store minimal quantities
• Perform risk assessment in accordance with safety data sheet
• Keep risk assessments in hazardous goods cabinet
• Use exhaust equipment such as air cleaning, ventilation or
respirator helmets
• Wear personal protective equipment

HAZARD OF INJURY DUE TO MECHANICAL ACTION • Schedule sufficient breaks

3 4 M 3 2 L
(bumps, bruises) • Only use appropriate tools for the intended purpose

• Vent or exhaust air from vessels during work

• Maintain a distance of at least 3 meters between fuel gases
and oxidation gases or provide for a fire-resistant partition
• Safety instructions in the instruction manual shall be observed
• Only use tools which are appropriate or intended for the activity
• Visual inspection before use
• Check to ensure that safety equipment is intact
• Remove fire loads, assign fire watches, provide for
extinguishing agents
HAZARD DUE TO FIRE OR EXPLOSION • Provide for fireproof storage cabinets
5 5 H 5 1 L
• Set up at a safe distance from ignition sources
• Ground cabinet to a suitable ground point
• Completely and safely separate containers
• Do not bring any compressed air cylinders into such areas
• Remove hoses from combustible gases and oxygen or
disconnect from supply point when work is interrupted
• ATTENTION! Liquid gas cylinders (propane or butane) shall be
stored at least 3 meters from ALL other types of gas cylinders
• NO SMOKING in storage area
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
• Barricade off work area if possible
• Accessing the barricaded area is strictly prohibited
• Only use tools which are suitable or intended for the activity
• Safety instructions and operating instructions shall be
HAZARD DUE TO HIGH PRESSURES observed
5 3 H 5 1 L
• Visual inspection before use
• Check to ensure that safety equipment is intact
• Check tools for inspection tags
• Use only appropriately trained and qualified personnel
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
• Compliance with 5 safety rules:
1. Isolate
2. Lock out to secure against restarting
3. Confirm that equipment is deenergized
4. Ground and short-circuit
5. Cover or barricade any adjacent items that are energized
• Check tools for inspection tags
HAZARD DUE TO ELECTRICAL CURRENT, HIGH VOLTAGE 5 5 H 5 1 L
• Safety instructions shall be observed
• Only use tools which are suitable or intended for the activity
• Use protected extra-low voltage (PELV) or safety extra-low
voltage (SELV) in confined spaces (Protection Class III max.
50
• V alternating current (AC) & 120 V direct current (DC))
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment
• Do not store near passages, ventilation systems or on uneven
surface etc.
• Do not keep anything else in the storage area for gas cylinders
• The storage of oil, paints or corrosive or flammable liquids in
particular is not allowable
• Ensure sufficient ventilation/air exhausting
• Never “sniff” hydrogen or poisonous gases to identify
• Gas cylinders shall be moved only by trained and authorized
personnel
STORAGE / TRANSPORT OF GASES & HAZARDOUS • If an acetylene cylinder has to be transported or stored
SUBSTANCES 5 4 H horizontally, it shall be placed in an upright position for as long 5 2 M
as possible thereafter, generally for 12 hours
• High-pressure oxygen reacts violently with oils and lube
grease, which can result in violent explosions or ignition
• NEVER use or apply white lead, red lead, sealants or sealing
tape on any gas cylinders, valves or accessories
• Oxygen equipment is the most at risk due to oil and grease,
therefore keep oily/greasy hands, cloths and gloves away from
all gas cylinder parts and accessories
• Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (appropriate
gloves, etc.) as necessary

Supervisors must review the work activity & complete the following sections, before commencing work to ensure that all risks are identified and controlled.
