“Along With The Gods: The Two Worlds & The Last 49 Days"

Along With The Gods, both The Two Worlds and The Last 49 Days,
are movies basing from the judgement of humans on the afterlife and what
lessons it would give us in between. In the first movie, it was mentioned
how, based on the Buddhist scripture, that humans are judged on the
afterlife based on the 7 mortal sins, Murder, Indolence, Deceit, Injustice,
Betrayal, Violence, and Filial Impiety. The first movie circulated on Kim Ja
Hong as he is the 48th Paragon, the first since 1920. He is defended by his 3
guardians, Ganglim, Hewonmak, and Lee Deok-Choon. The next movie
then circulated on two main stories, one is having Kim Su Hong, the brother
of Ja Hong, as their 49th paragon and the guardians' key to reincarnation.
Second is the history between the 3 guardians and how they connect with
eac other during their previous life, and how only Ganglim knows.
Throughout this movie, I have learned so much from what their
characters have shown. First lesson I learned was how it was important to
apologize on those you have wronged. Just like what happened to Ganglim,
when he was punished to live as a guardian along side Hewonmak and
Deok-choon who he wronged and killed when they were alive. He had to
live with the pain and regret and sorrow of being a wrong person to them
and he used that to convince Sgt Won to confess his sin to Su Hong and
apologize before its too late. Next is how there is really no bad person in this
world, that it was their circumstances that made them evil. An example is
Hewonmak when he was the most feared warrior during the Goryeo
dynasty and they were ordered to kill the Jurchens. Later on in the film, he
came across a group of orphans, one where Deok-choon is in. He took care
of them as he couldn't kill them and Deok-choon later on told him how her
parents were killed by the White Wildcat, which is him with his trademark
of a white scarf. He didn't want to kill them, he was ordered. Last is my most
favorite lesson. It is that those who meet will part at some point; and those
who part will return. It shows how your destiny and connectiveness with
someone will show how fate plays with you. It really wakes you up how you
realize these while watching the movies.
If we relate this to Ethics, most parts of the movie pinpoint a lot,
especially with Virtue Ethics. Virtue Ethics are theories that focuses more on
the character and virtue of a person rather than their doings in judging their
actions. In the first movie, the parts where Ja Hong is being judged on the 7
trials put him on the disadvantage when they point out how his actions were
wrong like lying to his mother, not saving his colleague, and beating up his
brother. The guardians defended him by showing his true character and
reasoning them on why he did those that are accused on him like leaving his
colleague in the fire to save 8 citizens, lying to his mom so that he would give
hope and let her recover fully. When talking about the Virtues Ethics of
Thomas St. Aquinas, I can say that his Cardinal Virtues were all presented
in the film. First is prudence which was shown by Ganglim on how he
understands the case of Ja Hong and Su Hong to help them pass the trial.
Next is justice which was shown on the 2nd film how Sung Ju respects the
old man on what he wants for his grandson. The third is fortitude which of
course is shown by the paragon himself Ja Hong and as well as Ganglim and
Hewonmak in both of the films. The last cardinal virtue is Temperance
which is shown in Sung Ju who, as a household god, can not lay his hands
on humans even if his physical body suggests otherwise. He wants to make
peace and he exercises control. These are all that I can relate from the films
to the Virtue Ethics.
