Labor Gap or Shortage of
Qualified Technical and Skilled Workers
» Although about 35% of Thai students are enrolled in vocational institutions, Thailand faces a
chronic shortage of qualified technical vocational workers across all industries, especially in
automotive, information communication and technology (ICT) and tourism sectors. (The Nation, 2016).
» Several reasons include:
• Rapid aging of Thailand’s population structure
• Cultural bias against the field
• Low quality local education
• Low proficiency in foreign languages, notably English
• Curricula and labor market demand mismatch
• Lagging productivity investments
