Concrete Mix Design: Grade M45

This document provides guidelines for concrete mix design with a target compressive strength of 45 MPa. It specifies the materials and their properties to be used, including cement, aggregates, water, and admixtures. A trial mix is designed with 450 kg/m3 of cement, 165 kg/m3 of water, and aggregate proportions to achieve a water-cement ratio of 0.37 and total density of 2,446 kg/m3. The mix will undergo further testing and adjustment to achieve the required workability and strength.

A-3 TARGET STRENGTH FOR MIX PROPERTIONING
f'ck = fck + 1.65 x S
where
f'ck = target avarage compressive strength at 28 days
fck = characteristic compressive strength at 28 days, and
s = standard deviation

From table 1, standard deviation, s = 5 N/mm2 .

Therefore, target strength = 45 + 1.65 x 5 = 53.25 N/mm2

A-4 SELECTION OF WATER-CEMENT RATIO

From table 5 of IS 456, maximum water-cement ratio = 0.50
Based on experience, adopt water-cement ratio as 0.385
0.366 < 0.50, hence O.K.

A-5 SELECTION OF WATER CONTENT

From table 2, maximum water content = 186 litre ( for 25 to 50 mm slump range )
for 20 mm aggregate

Estimated water content for 100 mm slump = 186 + 6 / 100 x 186 = 197 litre

As superplasticizer is used, the water content can be reduced up to 20 % and above.

Based on trials with superplasticizer water content reduction of 16 % has been achived.Hence ,
the arrived water content = 197 x 0.84 = 165 litre

A-6 CALCULATION OF CEMENT CONTENT

Water - cement ratio = 0.366
Cement content = 165/0.366 = 450kg/m3,

From table 5 of IS 456, minimum cement content for

Moderate' exposure condition = 300 kg/m3

450 kg/m3 > 300 kg/m3, hence, O.K.

A-7 PROPERTION OF VOLUME OF COARSE AGGREGATE AND FINE AGGREGATE CONTENT

From Table 3, volume of coarse aggregate corresponding to 20mm size aggregete and fine aggregate
(Zone ii ) for water-cement ratio of 0.5 = 0.62

In the present case water-cement ratio is 0.366. Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate is required to be
incresed to decrese the fine aggregate content. As the water-content ratio is lower by 0.13, the proportion
of volume of coaese aggregate is increased by 0.02 ( at the rate of -/+ 0.01 for every +/- 0.05 change in
water -cement ratio ) , Therefore, corrected propertion of volume of coarse aggregate for the water-cement
of 0.366 = 0.64,

Note - In case the coarse aggregate is not angular one, then also volume of coarse aggregate may be
required to be incresed suitable, based on experience .

For pumpable concrete these value should be reduced by 7 percent .

Therefore, volume of coarse aggregate = 0.64 x 0.93 = 0.60

Volume of fine aggregate content = 1 - 0.60 = 0.40

A-8 MIX CALCULATIONS .
The mix calculations per unit volume of concrete shall be as follows :

a) Volume of concrete = 1 m3

Mass of cement 1
b) Volume of cement = X
Specific gravity of cement 1000

450 1
3
= X = 0.143 m
3.15 1000

Mass of water 1
c) Volume of water = X
Specific gravity of water 1000

165 1
3
= X = 0.165 m
1 1000

d) Volume of chemical admixture

( superplasticizer ) @ 0.92 % by mass = Mass of chemical admixture 1
of cementitious material ) X
Specific gravity of admixture 1000

4.1 1
3
= X = 0.0034 m
1.23 1000

e) Volume of all in aggregete = (a-(b+c+d)

3
= 1 - ( 0.143 + 0.165 + 0.0034 ) = 0.689 m

f) Mass of coarse aggregate = e x Volume of coarse aggregate x specific gravity of coarse

aggregate x 1000
= 0.689 x 0.60 x 2.68 x 1000 = 1099 kg

g) Mass of fine aggregate = e x Volume of coarse aggregate x specific gravity of fine

aggregate x 1000
= 0.689 x 0.40 x 2.61 x 1000 = 728 kg
A-9 MIX PROPERTION FOR TRIAL NUMBER 1 GRADE : M45

CEMENT : 450 kg/m3

WATER : 165 kg/m3
20 mm : 648 kg/m3
12 mm : 450 kg/m3
M.Sand : 364 kg/m3
C.S.sand : 364 kg/m3
CHEMICAL ADMIXTURE : 4.1 kg/m3
TOTAL DENSITY OF FRESH CONCRETE : 2446 kg/m3
WATER-CEMENT RATIO : 0.37

NOTE - Aggregate should be used in saturated surface dry condition, if otherwise, when computing
of mixing water, allowance shall be made for the free(surface) moisture contributed by the fine and
coarse aggregate. On the other hand, if the aggregate are dry, the amount of mixing water should be
incresed by an amount equal to the moisture likely to be absorbed by the aggregates. Necessary
adjustments are also required to be made in mass of aggregates . The surface water percent water
absorption of aggregate shall be determined according to IS 2386 .

A-10 The slump shall be measured and the water content and dosage of admixture shall be adjusted
for achieving the required slump based on trial, if required. The mix propertions shall be reworked
for the actual water content and checked for durability requirements.

A-11 Two more trials having of +/- 10 % of water-cement ratio in A-10 shall be carried out and a graph
between three water-cement ratio and their corresponding strength shall be plotted to work out the
mix proportions for the given target strength for field trials . However, durability requirement shall
be met .
