Discrimination in Different Forms
It is generally unlawful for us to discriminate and judge others because of their characteristics. And
these characteristics as stated in the Equality Act of 2010 follows:
AGE - Age discrimination or also known as ageism is stereotyping and discriminating individuals or
groups on the basis of their age. This may be casual or systematic.
SEX - Sexism is prejudice or discrimination based on a person's sex or gender. Sexism can affect anyone,
but it systematically and primarily affects women and girls. It has been linked to stereotypes and gender
roles, and may include the belief that one sex or gender is intrinsically superior to another.
RACE - Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar
situation because of their race, color, descent, national or ethnic origin or immigrant status.
DISABILITY - is when a person with a disability is treated less favorably than a person without
the disability in the same or similar circumstances
SEXUAL ORIENTATION - often comes up in the context of employment actions. It usually refers to a
predisposition towards heterosexual people, which is biased against lesbian, gay, and bisexual people,
among others. It can, however, also be against heterosexual people
BELIEF - Belief discrimination is treating a group or an individual differently because of the beliefs they
hold whether religious or non-religious. Even in societies where freedom of religion is a constitutional
right, adherents of religious minorities sometimes voice concerns about religious discrimination against
them.
MARRIAGE | CIVIL PARTNERSHIP - Marriage and Civil Partnership discrimination is when you are treated
differently because you are married or in a civil partnership. Marriage can either be between a man and
a woman, or between partners of the same sex. Civil partnership is between partners of the same sex.
PREGNANCY | MATERNITY - Pregnancy and maternity discrimination is when you’re treated unfairly
because you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or because you’ve recently given birth. You must suffer a
disadvantage as a result of the unfair treatment. The law says you’ve been treated unfavorably.
GENDER REASSIGNMENT - Gender reassignment discrimination is when you are treated differently
because you are transsexual. A transsexual a person who emotionally and psychologically feels that they
belong to the opposite sex.
