Tech Tip: The Mouse Wheel

Jack McCauley, who claims to have invented the mouse scroll wheel, said in an interview that the scroll wheel was intended to let users interact with and move within applications in new ways, rather than just for scrolling. He had hoped it would be used to "go forward into an application" more directly. The document then provides 4 additional uses for the middle mouse button beyond just scrolling, such as closing browser tabs with a middle click on the tab title.

Did you know that in an interview with IGN, Jack McCauley, a co-founder at Oculus

who claims to have invented the mouse scroll wheel, said that the ubiquitous
feature is "not used in the way that I intended it to be used." He said that the scroll
wheel was designed to let users interact in new ways with their computers and
move along the X and Y axis. He had hoped scroll wheels would be used to get users
to "go forward into an application," he told IGN.

Here are a few uses of the scroll wheel adise from the obvioDifffereus “scrolling”.

1. Close browser tab
Middle-clicking a tab's title box (at the top of the browser window) will
cause the tab to close.

2. Open New Tab in the Background

Middle-clicking has another hidden use throughout Chrome: It will cause
a link to open in a new tab in the background, so you can continue
working in your current tab without interruption.

3. Run a new instance(s) of an application.

Middle-clicking on the active application’s icon on the Task Bar will open
a new instance of the said app.

4. Close a open window

by hovering over its taskbar icon, then middle-clicking the thumbnail that pops
up.

The middle mouse button doesn't get nearly as much attention as its right and
left brethren, but it's still a useful tool if you can remember what it does.
Hopefully this gives that button a bit more play in your productivity routine.
