Efficient Networks, Inc. – End User Software License and Limited Warranty
INSTALLATION OF THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE PROVIDED BY EFFICIENT NETWORKS, INC.
(“EFFICIENT”) CONSTITUTES ACCEPTANCE BY YOU OF THE TERMS OF THE FOLLOWING SOFT-
WARE LICENSE AND LIMITED WARRANTY. IF YOU DO NOT ACCEPT THESE TERMS, PLEASE RE-
TURN THE HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE IN ITS ORIGINAL PACKAGING TO THE STORE OR OTHER
VENDOR FROM WHICH YOU PURCHASED IT FOR A FULL REFUND OF THE PURCHASE PRICE.
The following describes your license to use the software (the “Software”) that has been provided with your EFFI-
CIENT DSL customer premises equipment (“Hardware”) and the limited warranty that EFFICIENT provides on its
Software and Hardware.
Software License
The Software is protected by copyright laws and international copyright treaties. The Software is licensed and not
sold to you. Accordingly, while you own the media (CD ROM or floppy disk) on which the Software is recorded,
EFFICIENT retains ownership of the Software itself.
1. Grant of License. You may install and use one (and only one) copy of the Software on the computer on which the
Hardware is being installed. If the Hardware is being installed on a network, you may install the Software on the net-
work server or other server-side device on which the Hardware is being installed and onto the client-side devices con-
nected to the network as necessary.
2. Restrictions. The license granted is a limited license. You may NOT:
sublicense, assign, or distribute copies of the Software to others;
decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble or otherwise reduce the Software or any part thereof to a human perceiv-
able form;
modify, adapt, translate or create derivative works based upon the Software or any part thereof; or
rent, lease, loan or otherwise operate for profit the Software.
3. Transfer. You may transfer the Software only where you are also transferring the Hardware. In such cases, you
must remove all copies of the Software from any devices onto which you have installed it, and must ensure that the
party to whom you transfer the Hardware receives this License Agreement and Limited Warranty.
4. Upgrades Covered. This license covers the Software originally provided to you with the Hardware, and any ad-
ditional software that you may receive from EFFICIENT, whether delivered via tangible media (CD ROM or floppy
disk), down loaded from EFFICIENT or delivered through customer support. Any such additional software shall be
considered “Software” for all purposes under this License.
5. Export Law Assurance. You acknowledge that the Software may be subject to export control laws and regulations
of the U.S.A. You confirm that you will not export or re-export the Software to any countries that are subject to export
restrictions.
6. No Other Rights Granted. Other than the limited license expressly granted herein, no license, whether express or
implied, by estoppel or otherwise, is granted to any copyright, patent, trademark, trade secret, or other proprietary
rights of EFFICIENT.
7. Termination. Without limiting EFFICIENT’s other rights, EFFICIENT may terminate this license if you fail to
comply with any of these provisions. Upon termination, you must destroy the Software and all copies thereof.
Limited Warranty
The following limited warranties provided by EFFICIENT extend to the original end user of the Hardware/licensee

This Chapter provides an overview of the SpeedStream 2601’s features and
capabilities.
Congratulations on the purchase of your new SpeedStream 2601 DSL/

Alternatively, the SpeedStream 2601 DSL/Cable Router can be used to

connect your local LAN to a remote LAN or WAN, via the SpeedStream
2601’s WAN port.

SpeedStream 2601 Features

The SpeedStream 2601 incorporates many advanced features, carefully
designed to provide sophisticated functions while being easy to use.

LAN Features

• Dual Ethernet ports. The SpeedStream 2601 has 2 Ethernet ports. One
(the LAN port) is used to connect to your local LAN. The other (the

4 Efficient Networks
WAN port) is used to connect to an external LAN, WAN or the Internet.
(Internet access requires an DSL or Cable modem.)
• DHCP Server Support. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol provides
a dynamic IP address to PCs and other devices upon request. The
SpeedStream 2601 can act as a DHCP Server for devices on your local
LAN.
• DHCP Client Support. On the WAN port, the SpeedStream 2601 can
act as a DHCP Client. This allows the use of dynamic IP addresses on
the WAN.
• Multi Segment LAN Support. LANs containing one or more segments
are supported, via the SpeedStream 2601's built-in static routing table. If
NAPT (Network Address Port Translation) is disabled, the SpeedStream
2601 will function as a static router.

Internet Access Features

• Shared Internet Access. All users on the LAN can access the Internet
through the SpeedStream 2601, using only a single external IP address.
The local (invalid) IP addresses are hidden from external sources. This
process is called NAPT (Network Address Port Translation).
• PPPoE Support. Connect to your ISP using PPPoE (PPP over
Ethernet), if your ISP uses this method.

Configuration and Management

• Easy Setup. Use your web browser from anywhere on the LAN for
configuration.
• Remote Management. The SpeedStream 2601 can be managed from a
PC anywhere on the LAN, using a web browser.

Advanced Functions

• NAPT Servers. This feature allows Internet users to access Internet

servers on your LAN. The required setup is quick and easy.
• Advanced NAPT Server Configuration. Internet users can access non-
standard Internet Servers on your LAN by using this feature.
• Special Internet Applications. Internet applications such as Internet
Videoconferencing, Telephony, Games Servers, and other special-
purpose Servers are supported.

Efficient Networks 5
• Host Mapping/NAT. One (1) PC on your local LAN can be exposed to
the Internet. This allows unrestricted 2-way communication between this
PC and servers or users on the Internet.

Security Features
• Configuration Data. Optional password protection is provided to
prevent unauthorized users from modifying the configuration.
• Access Control Features. The LAN Administrator can limit Internet
and E-Mail access by individual PCs.
• Firewall Protection. All incoming data packets are monitored and all
incoming server requests are filtered, thus protecting your network from
malicious attacks from external sources. (This protection is lost if NAPT
is disabled.)
• The firewall protection provided by the SpeedStream 2601 is an
intrinsic side effect of NAPT (Network Address Port Translation).
All users on the LAN share a single external IP address. From the
external viewpoint, there is no network, only a single device.
• For internal users, the SpeedStream 2601 acts as a “transparent
proxy server”, translating the multiple internal IP addresses into a
single external IP address.
• For external requests, any attempt to connect to local resources are
blocked. The SpeedStream 2601 will not “reverse translate” from a
global IP address to a local IP address.
• This type of “natural” firewall provides an impregnable barrier
against malicious attacks.

Package Contents
The following items should be included:
• The SpeedStream 2601 Router

12 Efficient Networks
Configuration Program
The SpeedStream 2601 contains an HTTP server. This enables you to
connect to it, and configure it, using your web browser.
Most browsers should work, provided they support HTML tables and
forms.

Preparation
Before attempting to configure the SpeedStream 2601, please check the
following:
• Since configuration uses the LAN connection, the SpeedStream 2601
must be installed and powered ON.
• If the SpeedStream 2601's default IP address (192.168.0.1) is already
used by another device, the other device must be turned OFF until the
SpeedStream 2601 is allocated a new IP address during configuration.

Connecting to the SpeedStream 2601

To establish a connection from your PC to the device:

1. Start your web browser.
2. In the Address box, enter "HTTP://" and the IP address of the
SpeedStream 2601, as in the following example:

3. You should then see the Home screen. Select the desired option from
the navigation bar.

If you can’t connect

If the SpeedStream 2601 does not respond, check the following:

• The SpeedStream 2601 is properly installed, LAN connections are OK,
and it is powered ON.
• Ensure that your PC and the SpeedStream 2601 are on the same network
segment. (If you don't have a router, this must be the case.)
• Ensure that your PC is using an IP address within the range 192.168.0.2
to 192.168.0.254 and thus compatible with the SpeedStream 2601's

Efficient Networks 13
default IP address of 192.168.0.1. Also, check that the network mask is
set to 255.255.255.0
In Windows, the IP address can be checked by going to Control Panel >
Network > TCP/IP > Properties to verify the properties for that protocol.

Password

If a password has be set for the device, you will be prompted for the
password.
• Leave the "User Name" field blank.
• Enter the password for this device, if one has been set.
If no password has been set, this dialog will not appear. Instead, you will
immediately see the Home screen.

Navigation & Data Input

Most screens contain a navigation bar on the left of the screen that allows
you to move about. You can also use the "Back" button on your browser.
NOTE: Changing to another screen without clicking the Save button does
NOT save any changes you may have made. HTML uses "forms-based
input"; you must submit (save) the form or your data will be ignored.

LAN Port Configuration

To configure the LAN port, select LAN Port from the navigation menu.
For most users, the default values for these fields should be satisfactory.

14 Efficient Networks
Data - LAN Port

Device IP Address IP address for the SpeedStream 2601. Use

the default value of 192.168.0.1 unless the
address is already in use or your LAN is
using a different IP address range. In the
latter case, use an IP address from within
the range used by your LAN.

Network Mask The default value 255.255.255.0 is

standard for small (class "C") networks.
For other networks, use the Network Mask
for the LAN segment to which the
SpeedStream 2601 is attached. i.e. the
same value as the PCs on that LAN
segment.

Data - DHCP Server

A DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server provides a valid

IP address (and the Gateway and DNS addresses) to a DHCP client (PC or
device) upon request. The SpeedStream 2601 can act as a DHCP server.
To use this feature:
• The PCs must be configured to act a DHCP clients. This procedure is
explained in the chapter entitled “DHCP”.
• The SpeedStream 2601 must be configured with the following data.

Operation If Enabled, the SpeedStream 2601 will

function as a DHCP server. The default value
is Enabled.
If you already have a DHCP Server, this must
be DISABLED.

Start IP Address The IP Start Address and IP Finish Address

Finish IP Address fields set the values used by the DHCP
server.
This range also determines the number of
DHCP clients supported. (Maximum number
of clients is 253.)

Efficient Networks 15

IP Addresses recommend a DNS.
If they don’t, you can copy the public DNS
entry from DNS (3) to DNS (1)
Multiple DNS entries should be entered in the
order you want them accessed. (The first
available DNS will be used.)

WAN Port Configuration

Data on the WAN port screen is used to identify this device to the remote
LAN. The IP address seen by the remote LAN is different than the IP
address on the local LAN.
To configure the WAN port, first select the appropriate connection type
(Direct Connection or PPPoE) on the Device screen and click the
Configure button.

Tip: If your ISP’s connection documentation does not refer to PPPoE,

select Direct Connection.

the section entitled Using the SpeedStream 2601’s DHCP Server.

No Router, no DHCP

If your LAN is NOT using DHCP and does NOT contain a router, check
the following settings for each PC:
IP Address
Ensure that the IP address for each PC is unique, and is from the same
address range as the SpeedStream 2601's Device IP address, as set on
the LAN Port screen.
For example, if the SpeedStream 2601 uses the default IP address
(192.168.0.1) and Network Mask (255.255.255.0), the PCs must use
addresses from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254.
Network Mask
All PCs, and the SpeedStream 2601, need to be using the same value
for the Network Mask. The default value is 255.255.255.0. On the
SpeedStream 2601, this value is set on the LAN Port screen.
Gateway
Set the Default Gateway Address to the SpeedStream 2601's IP
address (Device IP address, as set on the LAN Port screen). The
default IP address is 192.168.0.1.
DNS (Domain Name Server) Address
This should match the DNS address entered into the DNS IP address
field on the LAN Port screen.

Efficient Networks 27
DHCP

Overview
This Chapter covers the use of DHCP, using either an existing DHCP
Server or the SpeedStream 2601’s DHCP Server function.

What DHCP Does

A DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) server allocates a valid
IP address to a DHCP client (PC or device) upon request.
• The client request is normally made when the client device boots.
• The DHCP Server provides the Gateway and DNS addresses to the
client, as well as allocating an IP address.
• Windows 95 includes all the software required to act as a DHCP client.
• The SpeedStream 2601 can act as a DHCP server.

Checking if your PC uses DHCP

Under Windows 95, you can check if your PC is acting as a DHCP client
by using the following procedure. For other operating systems, check your
system documentation.

1 Select Control Panel > Network

2 Select the TCP/IP protocol for your network card

3 Click the Properties button

If the radio button for Obtain an IP address automatically is checked,
then your PC is acting as a DHCP client.

Checking your DHCP Server

If you already have a DHCP Server:

• Check that the DHCP Server function in the SpeedStream 2601 is
Disabled. This setting is on the LAN Port screen.

28 Efficient Networks
• Check your DHCP Server, and ensure that:
• IP address assigned to the SpeedStream 2601 (Device IP address,
set on the LAN Port screen) is compatible with the address range
used by the DHCP Server.
• Network Mask matches the value entered on the SpeedStream
2601's LAN Port screen.
• DNS IP address matches the value entered on the SpeedStream
2601's LAN Port screen.
• Gateway is set correctly. This depends on whether or not you have a
router installed on your LAN, as shown by the following table.

No Router Set the Default Gateway

address to the IP address
(Device IP address, set on the
LAN Port screen) assigned to
the SpeedStream 2601. The
default IP address is
192.168.0.1.

Router Do not change the Default

Gateway address. Instead, the
router must be configured as
explained in the chapter
entitled Routing.

Using the SpeedStream 2601’s DHCP Server

To use the SpeedStream 2601's built-in DHCP Server function:

• Ensure that the SpeedStream 2601's DHCP Server is enabled, and the
other DHCP data is correct. (Check the LAN Port screen).
• Configure your PCs to act as DHCP clients, as described below.

To Configure your PCs to use DHCP

Your PCs must be configured to act as DHCP clients. For Windows 95,
the procedure is detailed below. For other operating systems, check your
system documentation.
Windows 95 DHCP Client Setup

1 Select Control Panel > Network

Efficient Networks 29
2 Select the TCP/IP protocol for your network card

3 Click the Properties button

Routing

Overview
This Chapter explains the Routing features of the SpeedStream 2601.
While the SpeedStream 2601 includes a standard (static) routing table, this
feature can be completely ignored if you do not have a router on your
LAN.
If you DO have a router, it is necessary to configure BOTH the Router and
the Routing table in the SpeedStream 2601 correctly, as described in the
following sections.

SpeedStream 2601 Configuration

The routing table is accessed by the Routing link on the navigation bar.

Routing Table Data

An entry in the routing table is required for each LAN segment on your
Network, other than the segment to which this device is attached. The data
in the Routing Table is as follows.

Destination The network address of the remote

IP Address LAN segment.
For standard class "C" LANs, the
network address is the first 3 fields
of this Destination IP address. The
4th (last) field can be left at 0.

Network Mask The Network Mask used on the

remote LAN segment. For class "C"
networks, the standard Network
Mask is 255.255.255.0

Gateway The IP address of the Router on the

IP Address LAN segment to which this device
is attached. (NOT the router on the
remote LAN segment.)

Efficient Networks 31
Interface Select the appropriate interface -
LAN or WAN (External LAN or
WAN) from the drop-down list.

Metric The number of routers which must

be traversed to reach the remote
LAN segment. The default value is
1.

Router Configuration
It is essential that all IP packets for devices not on the local LAN be
passed to the SpeedStream 2601, so that they can be forwarded to the
external LAN, WAN, or Internet. To achieve this, the local LAN must be
configured to use the SpeedStream 2601 as the Default Route or Default
Gateway.

Local Router

The local router is the Router installed on the same LAN segment as the
SpeedStream 2601. This router requires that the Default Route is the
SpeedStream 2601 itself. Typically, routers have a special entry for the
Default Route. It should be configured as follows.

Destination IP Address Normally 0.0.0.0, but check your

router documentation.

Network Mask Normally 0.0.0.0, but check your

router documentation.

Gateway IP Address The IP address of the SpeedStream

2601.

Metric 1

Other Routers on the Local LAN

Other routers on the local LAN must use the SpeedStream 2601’s Local
Router as the Default Route. The entries will be the same as the
SpeedStream 2601’s local router, with the exception of the Gateway IP
address.

32 Efficient Networks
• For a router with a direct connection to the SpeedStream 2601's local
Router, the Gateway IP address is the address of the SpeedStream 2601's
local router.
• For routers which must forward packets to another router before
reaching the SpeedStream 2601's local router, the Gateway IP address is
the address of the intermediate router.

Options

Overview
This Chapter details the options available on the SpeedStream 2601’s
"Options" screen.
The Options screen is reached by selecting the Options link on the
navigation menu.
The options available on this screen are:
• Password
• NAPT (Network Address Port Translation)

Device Password

Once a password is entered, it is required in order to change the device

configuration. Passwords are case sensitive and can be up to 8
alphanumeric characters (no spaces or punctuation).
To create or change the password, enter the required password in both the
New Password and Verify Password fields.

When prompted for the password, leave the "User Name" blank.
NOTE: If the password is lost, a DIP switch setting is available to clear
the password.

NAPT (Network Address Port Translation)

NAPT allows PCs on your LAN to use a local (internal) IP address which
is invalid on the Internet. NAPT ensures that the local IP addresses are
invisible to external sources. Use the following to determine whether or
not you need NAPT.
• If using this device for Internet access, NAPT must be left On unless
PCs on your LAN have valid external IP addresses.
• If this device is not being used to provide shared Internet access, NAPT
is not normally required.

Efficient Networks 35
• If NAPT is disabled, the SpeedStream 2601 will act as a static router,
and the Advanced Setup features (NAPT Servers, Special Applications,
and Host Mapping) are no longer available.
• If NAPT is disabled, the Firewall protection provided by the
SpeedStream 2601 is lost.

TFTP

If enabled, TFTP (Trivial FTP) can be used to upgrade the firmware on

this device. Refer to the DIP switch settings on page 9 for the proper
switch setting to enable firmware upgrades via TFTP.

NAPT Servers

This feature allows you to make a server on your LAN accessible to

Internet users. Normally, Internet users would not be able to access a
server on your LAN because:
• Your Server does not have a valid external IP address.
• Attempts to connect to devices on your LAN are blocked by the firewall
in this device.
The "NAPT Server" feature solves these problems and allows Internet
users to connect to your servers, as illustrated below.

2 Enable Web Server on the NAPT Servers screen.

3 Enter the Device IP address (from the LAN Port screen) as the IP
address of the Web Server.

Host Mapping/NAT
This feature, if enabled, allows one (1) computer on your LAN to be
exposed to all users on the Internet, allowing unrestricted 2-way
communication between the "Host" and other Internet users or Servers.
• Internet users will see the PC as having the IP address shown on the
WAN Port screen of this device. (This is the same IP address used by
the NAPT Servers.)
• Any Internet user who knows this address can connect to the Host
Computer. (What happens after connection depends on what software
both computers are using).
This allows connection to special-purpose servers which require
proprietary client software, or 2-way user connections such as Video-
conferencing, which requires both users to run special software.
WARNING: To allow unrestricted access, the Firewall in this device is
disabled, creating a security risk.
• You should use this feature only if the "Special Applications" feature is
insufficient to allow an application to function correctly.

44 Efficient Networks
• This feature should be turned ON only when needed, and left OFF the
rest of the time.

Configuring the Host Computer

Select Advanced Setup from the navigation bar, then Host Mapping/NAT.

Data
The only data required is the LAN IP address. Enter the IP address of the
PC on your LAN which will become the "Host Computer".
Checking
Once configured and enabled, the Host Computer should respond to a
"ping" from any PC connected to the Internet. The "ping" command can
be entered in the Run dialog, as follows:
ping ip_address
Where ip_address is the IP address shown on the WAN Port screen of this
device.

Efficient Networks 45
Access Control

Overview
This Chapter explains how to configure and use the SpeedStream 2601’s
"Access Control" feature.
The Access Control feature allows administrators to restrict Internet
Access by individual PCs. The process uses "Packet Filtering" to block or
discard data packets. By default, no packets are blocked or discarded.
To use this feature:
• Set the desired restrictions on the "Everyone" group. By default, all PCs
are in the "Everyone" group unless explicitly moved to another group,
using the Individual Access screen.
• Set the desired restrictions on the other groups ("Group 1", "Group 2",
etc.) as needed.
• For each PC you wish to move from the "Everyone" group, enter their
details on the Individual Access screen, and assign them to the desired
group
NOTE: You can limit Internet access for ALL PCs without entering ANY
PC data. Simply apply the desired restrictions to the "Everyone" group.
It is also possible to define your own packet filters, and use these filters in
addition to the pre-defined filters. Defining your own filters is optional.

Group Access
The Group Access screen is reached from the Access Control link on the

Appendix A
Troubleshooting

Overview
This Appendix covers the most likely problems and their solutions.
This chapter covers some common problems that may be encountered
while using the SpeedStream 2601 and some possible solutions to them. If
you follow the suggested steps and the SpeedStream 2601 still does not
function properly, contact your dealer for further advice.

General Problems

Problem: Can’t connect to the SpeedStream 2601 to configure it.

Solution: Check the following:
• The SpeedStream 2601 is properly installed, LAN connections are OK,
and it is powered ON.
• Ensure that your PC and the SpeedStream 2601 are on the same network
segment. (If you don't have a router, this must be the case.)
• Ensure that your PC is using an IP address within the range 192.168.0.2
to 192.168.0.254 and thus compatible with the SpeedStream 2601's
default IP address of 192.168.0.1.
• Also, the Network Mask should be set to 255.255.255.0 to match the
SpeedStream 2601.
In Windows, you can check these settings by using Control Panel-Network
to check the Properties for the TCP/IP protocol.

Internet Access

Problem 1: When I enter a URL or IP address I get a time out error.

Solution 1: A number of things could be causing this. Try the following
troubleshooting steps.
• Check if other PCs work. If they do, ensure that your PCs IP settings are
correct (IP address, Network Mask, Default gateway and DNS).

52 Efficient Networks
• If the PCs are configured correctly, but still not working, check the
SpeedStream 2601. Ensure that it is connected and ON. Connect to it
and check its settings. (If you can't connect to it, check the LAN and
power connections.)
• If the SpeedStream 2601 is configured correctly, check your Internet
connection (DSL/Cable modem etc) to see that it is working correctly.
Problem 2: Some applications do not run properly when using the
SpeedStream 2601.
Solution 2: The SpeedStream 2601 processes the data passing through it,
so it is not transparent.
• Use the Special Applications feature to allow the use of Internet
applications which do not function correctly.
• If this does solve the problem you can use the Host Mapping function.
This should work with almost every application, but:
• It is a security risk, since the firewall is disabled.
• Only one (1) PC can use this feature.
• When the Host Mapping/NAT feature is being used, the Special
Applications and NAPT Server features should be disabled.
