Subject: Circuit Analysis Batch: 2018 Year: 2, Term: 3 Lab Handout-01

This document outlines a lab experiment on understanding the hazards of electric shock on the human body. The objectives are to understand electric shock hazards and how the amount of current changes with body resistance. The experiment involves measuring body resistance when dry and wet, then connecting a circuit to measure current flow. Safety rules for working with electricity are also discussed, such as ensuring equipment is safe, using proper procedure, and not working alone or in wet conditions. The results will show how current increases when the body is wet due to lower resistance. Review questions ask about how resistance varies and why current increases when wet.

UNDERSTAND THE HAZARDS OF ELECTRIC SHOCK ON HUMAN BODY AND

RULES FOR SAFE PRACTICE TO AVOID ELECTRIC SHOCK.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful completion of this experiment, the student will be able to:
 Understand the hazards of electric shock on human body and rules for safe practice to
avoid Electric shock.
 See how an amount of current is changed within human body with the variation of body
resistance.

EQUIPMENT:
 DC ammeter (range 0-50𝜇A)
 Multi meter with resistance scale
 9-12V battery or Power Supply

DISCUSSION:
 PART ONE: ELECTRIC SHOCK

1. Demonstration of current flowing within human body:

When person comes in contact with a live wire, the electric current starts flowing through the
body to earth. Although it is CURRENT which causes a shock and various physiological
effects, but current depends on voltage and resistance. Therefore, as voltage increases the
current also increases. In most cases a voltage up to 50V is safe.
Three human physiological conditions can result from electric shock, depending on the circuit’s
route through the body and the amount of current transmitted. Muscular configure 1.1. Notice
that it is the current that does the damage. Currents above 100 milli amperes or only one tenths
of an ampere are fatal. Currents below 100 milli amperes can be serious and painful.

Skin resistance may vary b/w 250 ohms for wet skin and large current area to 100,000 ohms for dry
skin and for wet skin resistance vary upto 1000 ohms.
2. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE AND TEST RESULTS:
1. Let us measure resistance, using ohm-meter. Measure your body resistance b/w these points
and enter results.
i. From right to left hand . . . ……………………. ohms
ii. From hand to foot ……………………………. ohms

2. Now wet your fingers with water and repeat the measurements.

3. Connect battery in series with micro-ammeter as shown in figure 1.2

4. Touch your both hands simultaneously at point A and B terminals of figure 1.2
5. With the help of micro-ammeter, let us now measure current flowing within human body.
 Current within human body …………………

Now wet your fingers with water and repeat the measurement.
 Current within human body due to wet hands ……………

 PART TWO: SAFETY RULES

The apparent reasons for accidents are;
 Ignorance
 Fatigue
 Mental pressure
 Faulty or improper tools
 Wrong procedure and
 Carelessness

Rules for safe practice and to avoid electric shock:

i. Be sure of the conditions of the equipment and the dangers present before working on
the piece of the equipment. Many technicians are killed by supposedly ‘dead’ circuits.
ii. NEVER rely on safety devices.

Such as fuses, relays and interlock systems to protect you. They may not be working and
may fail to protect when most needed.
iii. NEVER remove the GROUND WIRE of three wire input plug.

This eliminates the grounding features of the equipment making it a potential shock
hazards.
iv. Do not work on cluttered bench.
A disorganized mess of connecting leads, components and tools only leads to careless
thinking, short circuits, shocks and accidents. Develop habits of systemized procedure of
work.
v. Do not work on wet floor.
Your contact resistance to ground is substantially reduced. Work on rubber mat or an
insulated floor.
vi. Do not work alone.
It is better to someone around to shut of the power to give artificial respiration and to
call a doctor.
vii. Work with one hand behind you or in your pocket.
A current b/w two hands cross your heart and can be more fatal than a current from hand
to foot. A wise technician always works with one hand.
viii. Never talk to anyone while working.
Do not divert your mind by talking to anyone. Also do not talk to anyone, if he is
working on dangerous equipment.
ix. Always move slowly when working around electrical circuits.
Violent and rapid movements lead to accidental shocks and short circuits.
x. If you have to modify the circuit connections, first switch off the power, take out power
plugs/wires and only then modify it.
