Past Exams Ens 161

1. A man uses a scale and spring dynamometer to indirectly weigh himself. The question asks to determine his actual weight given the readings on the devices. 2. Determine the minimum angle and corresponding force and angle that will keep a pulley system in static equilibrium. 3. Given the total length of a cable wrapped around pulleys and the initial spring stretches, determine the distance the springs will stretch when a force is applied to points A and B.

PAST EXAMS ENS 161 CHAPTER 1

1. A former student of mechanics wishes to weigh himself but has access only to a scale A
with capacity limited to 400N and a small 80N spring dynamometer B. With the rig
shown (fig 1.), he discovers that when he exerts a pull on the rope so that B registers 76N,
the scale reads 268N. What is his correct weight?
2. Determine the smallest angle α for which the system will be in static equilibrium.
Also, find the corresponding values of magnitude force F and the angle β.
The pulleys are ideal.
3. A continuous cable of total length 8ft is wrapped around
the pulleys at A, B, C, and D. When y is zero, the springs are
each stretched 1.50ft. Det. the distance y if a force of F = 60lb
is applied to point A and B as shown.
4. A force P is applied as shown to a uniform cone which is
supported by three cords, where the lines of action of the cords
pass through the vertex A of the cone. Knowing that the cone
weighs 1.6 lb, det. the range of values of P for which cord DG
remain taut.
5. Two solid steel cylinder A and B are placed inside a 12m diameter hollow
cylinder as shown. If cylinder A weighs 140N and has a diameter of 4m and
cylinder B weighs 100N and has a diameter of 3m, det. the reaction at contact
point between the cylinder A and B for equilibrium position.
6. A force 500N is applied to the T-bar as position shown. Calculate the
equivalent system formed by two parallel forces at point B and D.
7. A uniform rod AB of length 8m is placed on two inclined planes. If a load P=1000N is
applied at point C where 3m is measured from point A as shown, calculate the
angle θ so that the system is in equilibrium and the reactions at contact point
A and B. Neglect the weight of the rod.
8. Determine the range of values of couple moment M for which the line of action
of the resultant of the system will intersect the bracket ABCD
9. A 30kg collar my slide freely along the circular rod, attached to
the spring whose stiffness of 350 N/m and whose unstretched
length is 0.90m. If the load P is being applied at the collar as position
shown, det. the magnitude of this force to maintain equilibrium.
10. If each pulley shown weighs 36.0lb and 720.0lb, find P to maintain equilibrium.
11. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force from the
given three forces acting at point O as shown.
12. Determine the maximum weight W of the block that can be suspended in
the position shown if each cord can support a maximum tension of 30.0lb.
Also, what is the angle θ for equilibrium?
13. The 400N load is supported by two cables and a spring.
Determine the tension in the two cables and the stretch
of the spring if k = 500N/m for equilibrium.
14. The beam has a weight of 700lb. Determine the shortest cable ABC that can
be used to lift it if the maximum force the cable can sustain is 1500lb.
15. The block has a mass of 5kg and rests on the smooth plane as shown.
Determine the unstretched length of the spring
16. Determine the forces in cables AC and AB needed to hold
the 20.0 kg cylinder D in equilibrium. Set F=300.0N and d=1.0m.
17. The pith ball is subjected to an electrostatic repulsive force F
which has measured components of Fz=40mN and Fy=20mN.
If β=135°, determine the magnitudes of F and Fx.
18. Three cables are connected at D and support the 390N load
as shown. Determine the tension in each cable.
