SONNET
It is a fixed lyrical poetry composed of 14 lines that follows a certain set of patter or rhyme scheme.
Came from the Italian word sonnet which means little song.
It originated in Italy probably in the 13th century
Sonnet has a strict rules.
If it violates the rule, it is can’t be consider as sonnet.
The typical subject matter of sonnet is love.
There are two major types of sonnet: Italian or Petrarchan and English or Shakespearean.
Petrarchan sonnet is made up of iambic hexameters or 6 pairs of iambs (ex. aRISE or the NIGHT) or also known as
Alexandrine lines (12 syllables per lies).
But some Petararchan also employ iambic pentameter or 5 pair of iambs (10 syllables per line).
Sir Thomas Wyatt translated Petrarcha’s work form Italian to English and brought sonnet in England where he also
left more than 30 of his original compositions
Wyatt and associate, Henry Howard (Earl of Surrey), introduced sonnet to England.
