Stata Assignment 1
Stata Assignment 1
For this week’s exercise, you will be responsible for creating frequency and percentage
distributions, as well as pie charts and bar graphs. We are going to work with data from
the General Social Survey. The General Social Survey is a nationally representative
data set that is used by many social scientists. I have created a small, practice data set
with a few of the variables from the survey for us to examine. Please make sure that
“Stata assign1_GSS2006.dta” is open.
You have been hired by a company to create a short profile of the American population.
They would like you to create a table and two graphs to add to the report:
2. Then, create a pie chart with the “owngun” variable. This variable measures
whether respondents say they or someone in their household owns a gun.
Include all required elements of a graph (labels, title, etc.)
3. Finally, create a bar chart with the “health” variable. This variable measures a
respondent’s self-reported health. Include all required elements of a graph
(labels, title, etc.)
4. Copy and paste each table and graph into a Word document.
a. To do this for your table, you can highlight the table from your results
window, copy it, and paste it into your Word document. Change the font to
Courier New so that it will line up correctly on the page. You may need to
change the font size.
b. For your pie chart and bar chart, select “copy” on the window containing
the chart, then paste it into your document.
Next, they want a short summary of your findings below each output. For each:
Report your findings for the overall distribution (are they evenly distributed or is
there one category the distribution?)
Report the percentages for each category. Use the tabulate command to get
percentage information on the owngun and health variables.
Use the cumulative percentage distribution to say something about the
distribution of degrees in the United States.
Summary: What do the tables and figures reveal about the U.S. population’s
education, gun ownership, and overall health? Is there anything you found
surprising, or anything you think is particularly important?
Last, save your word document to a jump drive or other folder and then upload your
document into blackboard. Make sure your name is on the document and verify that it
successfully uploaded, and then you are done!
