Chapter 1

INTRODUCTION

Introductory Paragraphs

Science education is the major part of developing of technology to

understand how process works. Study of science is important because it is

improving quality of life and make things much more understandable, more than

that it gives greater control over lives by proving path ways for finding answer to

questions (Muleta and Seid, 2016). The quality, relevance, methods of teaching,

human resources, scientific literacy, science process skills, higher order thinking,

science-technology-society, teacher quality, textbooks of science education have

a larger and wider impact in learning science. (Daba and Anbesaw, 2016).

It is said to be Mastery of science discipline needs practice. If there is no

practical work either group or individual it will be useless or will not be

knowledgeable. Having a functional science laboratory is very important

particularly in secondary schools for teacher science lesson where proper

experiments and observation is being conducted. Science laboratory has a major

role in teaching science education as it demonstrate more to the learner how

science work in using laboratory activities.

Niyanda (2011), expressed that teachers perform pragmatic and

demonstrations when the school has laboratories, fully equip, synthetic

substances and reagents. If there is none of these then science teachers prefer

lecture methods. Laboratory instruction is considered essential because it

provides training in observation, supplies, detailed information, and aroused

pupils' interest. It also goes further to say that "developing and teaching in an

effective laboratory as much skill, creativity, and hard work as proposing and

executing a first-rate research project. (Omiko, 2015).

Udonfu (2009) and Omiko (2015), observed that the use of the laboratory

in science teaching has the following benefits: (a) Laboratory teaching makes the

students learners to learn about the nature of science and technology in order to

foster the knowledge of human enterprise of science and thus enhance the

aesthetic and intellectual understanding of the child. The students can identify

cause and effect relationships and in this process develop important skills. (b)

Learning scientific inquiry skills that can be transferred to other spheres of

problem solving (that is acquisition of problem solving skills). One of the basic

goals of science education is to help students learn skills that can be applied to

other life situations in future. It thus follows that the exercise of transfer of such

learning condition must have something in common with the situation to which it

will be applied. (c) Students learning to appreciate and infact, emulate the role of

the scientist through acquisition of manipulative skills. The students should be

allowed to investigate by: Indirect observation of objects and materials for the

acquisition of mental as well as manipulative skills, example measuring

substances, using weighing balances pictures, cylinder, etc. Through multiple

trials, students can in the process of fiddling with materials and activities without

stated theories arrive at useful conclusions. Given a known theory, students can

be guided to observe some phenomena selected by the teacher and from such

observation make predictions that are likely to occur. (d) Developing interests,

attitudes and values by considering what science entails, it is clear that a field

experience has the best potential for stimulating a life time interest in science in

the students when accorded the chance for personal experience by handling the

real things. Students interest in science increases as they yearn to investigate

and explore more about their environment.

Notwithstanding the factor that the government put much endeavors in

building network in secondary schools only to enhance the quality of education.

Greater part of secondary school need utilitarian research facilities due to non-

functional of gear and materials, because of this they are doing their activities

inside the classroom which don't give appropriate setting to useful work. This has

prompted troublesome in understanding the science concepts which are

uncovered by poor execution of science educators in teaching science subject to

students. Some studies found that there is difficult in teaching science subject

without all around science research facility for students.

Theoretical Framework

Adeniran (2006) that laboratory instructional strategy gives a new

approach to science teaching and learning because it provides a non-threatening,

realistic and concrete approach to learning of science as opposed to the difficulty

encountered in learning the formal, abstract treatment of the typical textbook.

Oyedeji (2000), discovered that students taught with science Laboratory

Instructional Strategy performed significantly better than use of traditional lecture

and text book method. The most effective vehicle by which the process of inquiry

can be learned appears to be a laboratory method where the student

experiences, firsthand, the inquiry process. Laboratory method has also been

demonstrated to be effective means for comprehension, understanding and

application of scientific knowledge. Laboratory experiences provide opportunities

for teachers to model best practices in the study of scientific concepts, including

application of scientific methodologies, respect for life and the environment,

inclusion of learners of all abilities, and consistent adherence to safety standards.

Science educators have believed that the laboratory is an important

means of instruction in science since late in the 19th century.

Laboratory teaching assumes that first-hand experience in observation

and manipulation of the materials of science is superior to other methods of

developing understanding and appreciation. Laboratory training is also frequently

used to develop skills necessary for more advanced study or research. In the

rush to specify laboratory experiments, procedures, and equipment, little

attention had been paid to how students might learn from these experiences.

Students were expected to simply absorb the methods of inductive reasoning by

carrying out experiments.

From the standpoint of theory, the activity of the student, the sensorimotor

nature of the experience, and the individualization of laboratory instruction should

contribute positively to learning. Information cannot usually be obtained,

however, by direct experience as rapidly as it can from abstractions presented

orally or in print. Thus, one would not expect laboratory teaching to have an

advantage over other teaching methods in the amount of information retention,

in ability to apply learning, or in actual skill in observation or manipulation of

materials.

Conceptual Framework

The study is all about the availability of science laboratory in Cabuyao

Integrated National High School junior high school; and how practical work do is

conducted and how it affects students’ performance. The picture below represent

of what do they encounter of having a functional and non-functional science

laboratory around the campus.

and more than to know what are the hindrances do they experience when

learning and instructing about science lesson that involves practical work that is

done inside the science laboratory.

Statement of the Problem

Science laboratory is a very important resource input for teaching science.

Learning science is enhanced and the understanding level is improved when

students are engaged in science laboratory for practical experiments. Secondary

school is the base in preparing students for science and technology education,

and it is at this level where they were exposed to laboratories equipment,

activities and precaution or safety rules. Students’ interest and their academic

achievement in science education have direct relation and at the same time affect

practices of students in classroom and are strongly related to their academic

achievement.

1. To discover what hinders a science teacher to use science laboratory.

2. To know what makes the science teacher of Cabuyao Integrated National High

School think that the science laboratory is not functional.

3. To know the possible effects to the Academic performance of the Junior High

school of having a non-functional science laboratory
