FIRST YEAR - SEMESTER - I
IC 101 DESIGN STUDIO – I :
EMPHASIS:

 Initiating knowledge of Anthropometrics - the basic Design Tool.

 Thrust is on Anthro-intensive studies from a very simplistic level to a complex one.
 Special emphasis on presentation.-graphical-two dimensional and three-dimensional through models

CONTENTS:
 Human being and his basic living activities.
 Understanding small single spaces with single and multiple uses - its graphical representation.
 Understanding of activity/space relationship, programme and spatial organization, understanding of
functionalities circulation, movement, transition, hierarchy of spaces etc.
 Creating spaces through analysis and synthesis.
 Functional analysis, anthropometrics, space planning for living activity.

DESIGN ISSUES:

 Efficiency in terms of movement, usability of space.

 Qualitative aspects of space.

SKILLS:

 Sketching, simple presentation

 Simple analytical drawings

 Use of various mediums for presentation

EXERCISES:

 Simple anthro-related exercises like milk booth, tea stall, pan-galla, snacks counter, at a public space.
 Multiple use complexes small space involving activities like seating, sleeping, cooking, eating, working etc. -
Single Room Designing.

IC 102 BASIC DESIGN – I :

EMPHASIS:

 Principles of designs.
 Visual perception and expression through simple elements of design – lines, planes, solids etc.
 Visual organization and perception of spaces through elements .
 Developing Freehand Drawing Skills using Different Techniques, tools, and media, to enhance observation
and visual perception
 Introduction to various theories of perception

 Understanding of elements of visual perception - line, form, space, colour, texture, pattern etc. signification of
principals of design in visual organizations.
 Relationship among forms, Form/Space relationship,

model making, and design of small functional spaces.

IC 103 TECHNICAL REPRESENTATION DRAWINGS – I:

EMPHASIS:

 Developing Drawing skills as tools for Design thinking and expression.

CONTENTS:

 Familiarizations with drawings materials and equipments

 Point and line, straight and curvilinear lines, lettering
 Line Intensity, sharpness and gradation for presentation
 Introduction to Drawing terms
 Principles of plane geometry, scale, orthographic projection - of points, lines, planes and solids Sections of

IC 104 MATERIALS & CONSTRUCTION –I :

EMPHASIS:

 Overview of Building Industry

 Role of Designer in the scheme of overall building industry
 Exposure to various materials used in construction for different elements of building.
 To make students aware of the various elements and impart a basic knowledge and functioning of the various
parts.
 Site Visits / sketches / write up of technical reports are considered essential at this stage
 Collect information regarding manufacturing qualities, varieties and uses.

CONTENTS:

 Introduction to materials - their physical and behavioral properties, methods and tools of application, criteria
for selection of materials based on design etc.
 Materials: Mud, Bricks, Stone, Timber, Concrete, Steel, Bamboo.
 Visual quality of materials in terms of texture, colour, pattern etc.
 Rational choice for material selection - parameters of design aspects of using various materials in construction
of different elements of construction system in relation to the properties of materials.
 Elements of Building (Cross section of a building - sub structure / super structure)
 Basic Terminology ; Basic elements of structure and their behaviour.

EMPHASIS:

 Study of Man and his culture to form derivation in the contemporary World
 To study the formalization of a ` CIVILIZED’ state through a long collective human experience
 Extensive use of Audio-Visual aids will facilitate this understanding in an easy manner

CONTENTS:

 Study the Ancient World through its History, Art, Religion, Culture, anthropology ,Philosophy, etc. to earmark
cultural Landmarks responsible for shaping our surroundings.
 Study of Medieval and Modern times to understand the Cultural Development through the ages.

IC 106 WORKSHOPS – I:( COLOUR )

EMPHASIS:

 Understanding colour as an integral part of creation; analyzing the intrinsic nature of colour as an important
element of design.
 Giving strong scientific base and generating sensitivity towards colors .

IC 201 DESIGN STUDIO – II :

 Articulation and space - planning for Residential spaces.

 Understanding basic residential requirements through design of spaces within a given context.
 Space making in an existing context allowing some freedom within the given architectural frame to achieve a
harmonious whole of various activities.
 Basic Awareness of services in a residential space and also structural understanding.

IC 203 TECHNICAL REPRESENTATION DRAWINGS – II:

IC 301 DESIGN STUDIO – III :

EMPHASIS:
 Understanding of Commercial requirements in terms of scale, nature and importance with an insight customer
psychology – their expectations and aspirations, ambience
 Beginning of an attempt at basic conceptualization in terms of general layout, related services, overall theme.
 Small commercial spaces like fast food corners, saloons, shops etc .

CONTENT:

 Design efficiency in terms of movement pattern, relationship between display, storage and sales; exploring
customer-owner behavioral pattern, efficiency in function in function and activities.
 Material exploration, colour, texture of finishing and furnishing materials.
 Basic understanding of construction techniques and sequence .

 Presentation skills with special emphasis on methods of display and its analysis, design of display and
furniture units, its materials and colour and finishing items.

IC 302 BASIC DESIGN – III:

 Exercising abstract concepts & ideas in design

CONTENT:
 Analysis of principles & composition used in a manmade environment using abstraction in 2 D & 3 D
dimensions
 The design process & role of abstract concepts & ideas as an ordering mechanism.
 Symbolism & communication, identity, character & image ability.
 Exploring environmental qualities like sound & light

 To explore and analyze above aspects selected architectural projects may be used for studio exercise.

 Abstract design work to help expression of personal concepts or ideas must also be a part of studio &
workshop assignments.

 Total understanding of project execution on site, including building services through a combined studio and
construction programme.
 Learning to make highly involved technical drawings with specifications.
 Through understanding of building services with referred to location, safety etc.
 Detailed constructional - working drawings for implementation of a project

EMPHASIS:

 Inquiry by design - designing a space for the chosen subject/in selected field after detailed study of various
aspects.

ISSUES:

 Thesis is intended to evaluate the student’s capacity and maturity in the field of Interior Design.

CONTENT :
 The area of work chosen by the student with the guidance of a faculty member/s could be in any of the areas
in the field of Interior Design for example
 History and theory of Interior Spaces - its application/validity to present day context.
 Interior Design language in various culture, art and craft forms and its relevance into interior spaces.
 Mass production of various interior elements
 Material search to replaces conventional Furniture elements
 Urban Interiors
 Softer elements of Interior Spaces
 Graphics and space Transformation
 Space psychology and human behavior etc.

PROGRAMME:

 The study in the chosen field would be caused out in two stages:
 (A)Data collection & analysis
 An in-depth investigation into the aspects of the chosen area.
 Analysis of data, inferences to establish underlying principles
 Review of existing practices/theory in view of current contexts
 (B)Design.
 Prepare Programme
 Design on basis of part A.

EMPHASIS:

 Conservation of historical monuments, buildings and sites.

 Main emphasis on understanding possibilities of Adaptive Re-use.

CONTENT:
 Introduction, various terms used as conservation
 Architectural Conservation :Need and Importance of conservation of historical monuments, buildings.
 Urban Conservation : Identification of areas for conservation. Approaches and techniques .
 Landscaping, maintenance and management of conserved areas or buildings.
 Case studies from India and abroad.
 Restoration of old buildings - materials used, techniques and equipment. Deterioration and preventive
measures.
